Job Summary

The De Mutsert Fish Ecology Lab is hiring a postdoctoral research associate to work on an ecosystem model of the Northern Gulf of Mexico. Funding is available for 3 years and can be extended by attracting additional research funding. This is a research focused job with no teaching obligations.

Job Description and Responsibilities

We invite applicants for a full-time postdoctoral research position as part of Dr. De Mutsert’s Fish Ecology Research Lab within the Division of Coastal Sciences of the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi. The successful candidate will participate in the development of an ecosystem model that represents the northern Gulf of Mexico and its estuaries, and evaluate effects of environmental change in this region on fish, shellfish, and their fisheries. The main project the successful candidate will be working on as part of a large group of scientists is the Mississippi Delta Transition Initiative: https://www.nationalacademies.org/news/2023/11/gulf-research-program-awards-22-million-to-launch-new-mississippi-river-delta-transition-initiative-consortium

This project aims to project the evolution of the lower Mississippi River Delta over the coming decades and its effects on ecosystems, industry, natural resources and communities. This position will focus on the effects on fish and fisheries. Funding is available for 3 years and can be extended by attracting additional research funding. Main tools used for this work are Ecopath with Ecosim, R and ArcGIS, and experience with these programs is a plus. Additional research questions to be answered with the ecosystem model that this position will be involved in include evaluating effects of freshwater inflow in the Mississippi Sound on fish and shellfish.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in oceanography, marine biology, fisheries science, or a related field. The successful candidate will be required to pass a USM employment background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with ecosystem and food web models, fish population dynamic models and stock assessment, species distribution models, and geospatial analysis of large fisheries and environmental datasets

  • Experience working in collaborative, multidisciplinary projects

  • Experience with the Ecopath with Ecosim software

  • Experience with R

  • Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced through publications in the peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations to a variety of audiences

  • A commitment to foster inclusion and working with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, and identities
