Clarke Community School District is looking to hire an ASL Translator/Interpreter position for the 2024-2025 school year.

QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health or willing to obtain.

2. Associate of arts or bachelor of arts degree preferred. 3. Two-year (or more) interpreter training program and/or experience involving extensive contact with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

JOB SUMMARY: Interpret between English and American Sign Language (ASL; or another signed or visual system) at a fluent rate. Only the essential functions and primary responsibilities are listed below; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the student services department.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interpreting any and all information presented in a classroom or building situation (e.g., lectures, announcements, discussions, assemblies).

  • Serving as liaison to promote rapport between general education and deaf education classrooms, students, parents, the school and deaf community.

  • Maintaining satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students and other employees.

  • Ability to become knowledgeable about and apply classroom/building procedures and district policies.

  • Ability to follow directions, to work independently and to work collaboratively with school district staff.

  • Take directions from principals, and classroom teachers.

  • Interpret verbal communication – in school or over the phone with parents and teachers.

  • Translate classroom assignments, documents, etc. for students.

  • Translate verbal communication for parents and students.

  • Providing access to the student’s school day, which may include testing time, clubs or independent work.

  • Interpreting for school-sponsored functions outside of the classroom during regularly scheduled school hours (not required to interpret at non-school sponsored events).

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Encourage the student’s independence within the school setting.

  • Attending staff and individualized education plan (IEP) meetings (when appropriate).

  • Participating as part of the IEP instructional team and working collaboratively with other team members.

  • Interpreting as delineated by the student’s IEP, using the district’s communication policy as a guide.

  • Seeing professional development opportunities and attending district-sponsored professional development opportunities (as appropriate) and complete all safety training as required.

  • Follows and embodies the districts mission, vision and belief statements.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Pay rate per the negotiated contract and other benefits per employee handbook.

EVALUATION: Evaluation procedure shall follow the Clarke Community School District boardpolicy 411.7.
