Summary: The R&D technology plan for Polyiso Insulation development focuses on next-generation chemistry and novel technology, structure-property relationships, and assessing improvements/changes to GAF’s Polyiso roofing system & wall insulation system that benefit the total system performance. This position will focus on supporting product and technology development in these, and future areas, and supporting the transition of products/technology to manufacturing. This position will be working under the direction of an ISO scientist to conduct the following

  • Carry out lab experimental work related to ISO technologies/processes/products

  • Capable of diagnosing issues and finding solutions to support the development of new products and new technologies

  • Support structure-property relationship understanding in the lab and at the plants

  • Characterize ISO insulation and test physical properties

  • Develop lab test methods and apply experience in R&D instrumentation, equipment, and lab procedures, and recommend improvements

  • Report on experimental data and provide results in distilled formats

Essential Duties:

  • Must champion safety

  • Involve in developing ISO insulation product platform and contributing to the improvement of product and process

  • Assist in developing solutions and ideas through evolutionary changes to existing practices/products/formulations/processes and develop alternative approaches

  • Handle major project tasks by planning and executing lab work on assigned projects and priorities, under the direction of ISO scientist

  • Assist in plant trials in terms of experimentation, sample collection, and testing

  • Develop test methods to characterize ISO insulation products and perform troubleshooting

  • Provide input on new equipment and instrumentation; equipment installation and preventive maintenance; testing; plant personnel training

  • Provide technical support & services for ISO product lines to Marketing, Quality, and other functional teams

  • Manage own time, work in a team, and handle deadlines/changing priorities

  • Provide interpretation of data and other information in written reports or presentations

Under This Roof, We Require

  • Associate Degree in Engineering, Applied or Physical Science with a minimum of 4 years relevant work experience or

  • BS Degree in Engineering, Applied or Physical Science with a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience

Technical knowledge/skills

  • Proven ability to develop complex analytical test methods with minimal supervision

  • Proven ability to write work instructions, such as test methods, SOP, and JSA, for use in R&D and in plants.

  • Capable of developing training materials and presenting information to other R&D and plant personnel.

  • Proficient in spreadsheets. word processing and presentation applications (Google, Microsoft, or others).

  • Basic knowledge of statistics; able to set up and run DOE’s.

  • Knowledge of product quality tests, and understanding product requirements versus specifications.

  • Knowledge of the product development process and some experience taking products from the lab, through manufacturing, to commercialization

General knowledge/skills (entry, intermediate, advanced)

  • Expertise in testing or sample preparation in more than one area

  • Ability to learn new technology/equipment

  • Ability to meet time-sensitive deadlines and adapt to a changing environment

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills with strong attention to detail

  • Highly motivated with the ability to work independently and manage their own time well
