Job Description Summary
The Center for Cytokine Storm Treatment & Laboratory (CSTL) at the University of Pennsylvania is a cutting-edge, internationally-recognized Center dedicated to advancing treatments for cytokine storm disorders and pioneering novel approaches to drug repurposing with external partners such as Every Cure. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Strategy & Business Development to serve as the right-hand person and strategic advisor to the CSTL’s Founding Director, Dr. David Fajgenbaum. Inspired by his team’s success repurposing over a dozen drugs for new uses, including one that is saving his own life, Dr. Fajgenbaum and his teams are on a mission to unlock the life-saving potential of FDA-approved drugs to treat every disease and patient possible. The ideal candidate will have a blend of scientific expertise and business acumen, allowing them to effectively foster collaborations, identify strategic opportunities, and engage with key stakeholders across academia, biotechnology, pharmaceutical industries, and funding agencies. This position will stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and breakthroughs in immunology and drug repurposing, leveraging innovative approaches to drive scientific discovery and therapeutic development.
Job Description
The Director of Strategy & Business Development’s primary responsibility will be to provide strategic leadership to the CSLT as well as support and strategic assistance to Dr. Fajgenbaum in fulfilling his responsibilities effectively and efficiently. The individual will act as a bridge between Dr. Fajgenbaum and other senior leaders, facilitating communication, decision-making, and the execution of key initiatives. The Director of Strategy & Business Development requires a deep understanding of drug development and/or repurposing, ideally in immunology, through master’s, PhD, or MD training, experience working in biopharma, and/or an MBA. This person will need to work collaboratively across teams to drive Dr. Fajgenbaum’s vision forward and will develop deep connections with leaders across drug development, biomedical research, venture capital, venture philanthropy, and government and have substantial career development opportunities. This position has a broad scope of influence, extending across all areas of Dr. Fajgenbaum’s initiatives, including the CSTL, Every Cure, Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA, Castleman Disease Collaborative Network, and biotech companies.
DUTIES include but not limited to:
Provide strategic leadership and advice to Center Director as well as project leads and teams, managing staff, resources, and effective use of materials and finances.
Partner with the Center Director to develop and advance the vision and strategic priorities of the Center.
Collaborate with scientists and computational biologists to support the advancement of immunology and/or drug repurposing research.
Advise and monitor complex projects, protocols, grants, and budget development, implementation, and reporting.
Oversee project statuses in partnership with the Center Director.
Collaborate closely with Center leadership to successfully execute projects.
Lead and motivate the team with vision, integrity, and flexibility.
Develop and maintain key performance indicators for measuring team performance.
Facilitate communication within the Center and externally.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 7 to 10 years or Master of Science, Master of Arts, and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Advanced degree (MS MBA in a biomedical field and/or PhD, MD) 3-5 years of experience within the healthcare sector preferred. Experience working as a consultant, Chief of Staff, or similar role with a growth-stage start-up preferred. Demonstrated success in leading and developing high-performing teams is PREFERRED
Knowledge of immunology concepts, biomedical research, and healthcare operations required. Strong understanding of immunology is a plus.
Familiarity with data science concepts required. Knowledge of data science methodologies and machine learning techniques a plus.
A strong understanding of academic science and research execution in an academic medical center a plus.
