UPMC Senior Histotechnologist/Histotechnician in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is hiring a full-time Senior Histotechnologist or Histotechnologist/Histotechnician to join the Pathology Lab team!

This is a daylight position, 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with rotating weekend and holiday on-call responsibilities.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary based on their individual experience and education. The Histotechnologist role starts at $23.61/hr. The Histotechnician role starts at 21.86/hr.

UPMC is currently offering a generous sign-on bonus for Histotechnicians and Histotechnologists!

Sign-On Bonus Details:

  • $12,000 for a 2-year commitment for Inexperienced candidates

  • $15,000 for a 2-year commitment for Experienced candidates

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures all tissues are embedded and cut according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation and complete sections including no folds, chatter, artifacts or floaters.

  • Performs QC checks at each phase of processing/ staining.

  • Demonstrates complete knowledge of CoPath related to Histology workflow.

  • Maintains instruments following quality control specifications and daily maintenance protocols. Performs root cause analysis on equipment failures and unexpected test results, informing the supervisor of critical failures. Coordinate equipment repair and service as necessary.

  • Performs all tasks of an advanced staining bench (i.e. IHC, special stains, etc.)

  • Provides independent technical leadership, consulting with the histology leadership team on unusual or complex cases. Serve as a resource to others regarding procedural and technical information. Provide ongoing training, orientation and instruction to histology team members and students.

  • Processes and prepares surgical and autopsy tissue specimens for embedding, cutting, staining and coverslipping. Embeds and cuts specialized tissue based on location including minute biopsy protocols. .

  • Accurately prepares slides for microtomy using the barcode label to maintain correct patient identification throughout the process.

Senior Histotechnologist:

  • Bachelor's degree with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • 2 years of clinical laboratory experience post-training is required.

Histotechnologist:

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP):

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours of biology and chemistry AND successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnology program within the last 5 years OR;

  • B.S. Degree from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory in the U.S., Canada or a CAP/The Joint Commission (JCAHO)/AABB accredited laboratory within the last 10 years.

  • Experience must be under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology) or an appropriately board certified medical scientist.

  • 1 year of full time experience in a histology laboratory preferred.

Histotechnician:

  • High school diploma.

  • Completion of the educational requirements needed to take the Histotechnician (HT) exam:

  • Successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT program within the last 5 years OR;

  • Associate's Degree or at least 60 semester hours of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university with a combination of 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry.

  • 1 year of clinical laboratory experience post-training is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • HTL (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 1 year of hire.

  • HT (ASCP)- Am Society Clinical Pathology required within 18 months of hire.

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification required for Senior HTL.

  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal

  • Act 33 with renewal

  • Act 34 with renewal

  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
