The Associate Director, Business Development Transactions will possess strong business acumen with experience in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry. A strong interest in the deal making process in the industry is required as the candidate will work on business development transactions (e.g., licensing, research & clinical collaborations, equity investments) and related activities under the guidance of senior BD Transactions leaders. This individual is required to have strong interpersonal skills as they will work with multiple internal and external stakeholders to facilitate various business development projects. The candidate will conduct business and commercial analyses, support negotiation of business development transactions, including licensing and other strategic collaboration opportunities for assets in various stages in support of BMS strategy and objectives across all therapeutic areas.
Key Responsibilities
Demonstrate leadership and business acumen while collaborating closely with internal Search & Evaluation (S&E), Enterprise Strategy, Finance, R&D, Commercial and Manufacturing stakeholders and potential external partners.
Support therapeutic area strategies by working on the execution of external business development opportunities.
Support deal teams in formulating transaction strategies, negotiating terms, contracting, and executing various types of BD transactions (e.g., CDAs, MTAs, term sheets, collaborations, in/out licensing agreements, and other strategic alliances).
Co-lead, with the S&E team and the therapeutic area leads, the development of business case assessments and recommendations of external opportunities, including deal proposals, valuation, and materials for BMS governance bodies.
Work with senior BD Transactions leaders to develop proposed deal structure and terms, utilizing knowledge and research of industry deal making trends.
Efficiently lead cross-functional team meetings and communicate updates when needed to internal leadership and external stakeholders.
Identify solutions to bridge gaps with partners when needed, communicate deal issues, risks, and updates to BD Transactions leadership and senior internal stakeholders as appropriate, drive the review of and provide comments to term sheets and contracts drafted by the Legal team to ensure they reflect business intent.
Qualifications & Experience
BS/BA degree required.
MBA, JD, or other advanced degree in the biomedical field preferred.
Minimum 3 - 5 years of biopharma experience and strong interest in business development transactions.
Knowledge of pharmaceutical industry issues, trends, and their business impact, and understanding of the drug development, approval, and commercialization process.
Ability to integrate scientific knowledge into business models and understand fundamentals of sales forecasts and P&Ls.
Basic understanding of discounted cash flow, net present value, internal rates of return and risk analysis techniques is preferred.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently under the supervision of senior BD Transaction leaders.
Strong analytical and communication skills.
Strong interest in reviewing, editing and negotiating contracts.
Proven ability to work well with multi-disciplinary teams.
Proven ability to consistently deliver on commitments in a timely manner.
