Summary The Clinical Nurse Educator will conduct onsite Nursing Service orientation at the St. Albans Campus for all new Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Healthcare Technicians, and Nursing Assistants for the St. Albans Campus, as well as Health Care Technicians and Nursing Assistants for the Manhattan and Brooklyn campuses. The incumbent will work flexible hours to meet the training needs of staff on day, evening, and night shift. Responsibilities The duties of this position include, but are not limited to: Delivers a fundamental understanding of adult learning principles and a lifelong learner that can practice with flexibility to adapt or change learning strategies based on the assessment of learning needs within the healthcare organization. Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising staff education. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates educational needs to facilitate learner development and skill training of clinical staff. Utilizes innovative teaching strategies, assessment skills, and evaluation of outcomes. Assists with the orientation of new employees, evaluation of their progress in the orientation process, and development and implementation of a learning plan for improving identified deficiencies. Serves as a trainer and consultant for Resuscitation Education Initiative (Redi) Program including certification as Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor. Supports nurse residency programs including the development of curriculum utilizing strategic learning methodologies such as simulation, lecture case studies and virtual reality. Systematically evaluates current practice, formulate outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within area of expertise. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of education focused on staff education, self-management, and customer satisfaction throughout the healthcare continuum. Collaborates with other Clinical Nurse Educators, the Chief of Patient Services Education, and inter-professional healthcare teams in the ongoing clinical education activities including in-services, training, competency assessment, and evaluations of both current and new staff nursing skills. Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising staff education Reviews current nursing literature for new trends and changes based on evidence-based research with the ability to propose practice and documentation revisions based on evaluation of outcomes. Provides educational activities for nursing and allied health staff to maintain and improve competence in specified responsibilities stated in their job description and meet regulatory and VA directives. Nurse educators' responsibilities are assigned in a matrix such that each educator has assigned units/areas that they support, programs that they are responsible for coordinating (including employee orientation and mandatory training), services for which they serve as a liaison, alternate assignments for cross-coverage, databases that they are responsible for maintaining, and committees on which they represent Patient Services. Competence of staff is assessed and maintained through orientation, ongoing in-service and other education and training programs. These are accomplished through provision of such activities as: Orientation of new Community Living Center nursing staff Unit Specific Training, education/practice resource Simulation training Service, unit/area, and position-specific orientation In-services on various topics and just in time training for skills that are low volume and high risk Continuing Education programs Cross-Training Annual Mandatory Reviews Competency Assessment Program Program Updates CPR program delivery via RQI AED Training Academic Affiliation Coordinator for St Albans Campus Product Evaluation, Training & Implementation Standards/Policy/Procedure Development and Implementation Regulatory competency compliance and educational corrective action plans Development and updating of initial competencies This position may require additional duties as assigned. Preferred Experience: 2-3 years of Long-term Care/Community Living Center nursing experience and Nursing Education experience. Preferred Education: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Nursing Education. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program.
