Radford University Occupational Health & Safety Officer in Radford, Virginia

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety ( EHS ), the Occupational Health and Safety Officer supports the department in promoting safety across the campus and in maintaining compliance with a variety of regulations as it relates to the safety of the University environment. Roles and responsibilities of the Occupational Health and Safety Officer include:

  • Implementing EHS programs and promoting compliance practices to achieve program excellence in an atmosphere of continuous improvement.

  • Assisting with the management of the university’s comprehensive safety plan and providing support with periodic program and plan updates.

  • Providing support during the development and review of departmental safety programs.

  • Ensuring necessary inspection and audit activities are completed as required

  • Acting as a representative of Environmental Health and Safety in interactions with the campus community.

  • Working with the Laboratory Safety Officer for all the required inspection processes for chemical storage, safety showers, eye washes, and fume hoods and ensuring proper record-keeping.

  • Providing assistance with the management of regulated and hazardous materials and waste, its storage, and response to spills.

  • Compiling accident/incident data and conducting initial investigations for incidents, injuries, and general complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace as well as identifying, assessing, and monitoring workplace hazards (including but not limited to, chemical, physical, and biological hazards) that could be present in the work area and recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.

  • Preparing and conducting occupational safety-related in-class and online training for a diverse group of campus constituents.

  • Other administrative duties, as needed, including records management, auditing, and reporting as required by federal, state, and local regulations and university policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of Occupational Safety Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

  • Understanding of chemicals, hazardous waste streams and associated hazards.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience preparing technical reports and professional correspondence including the ability to draft, edit, and produce a variety of documents such as data analysis, training manuals, and compliance reports.

  • Must be proficient in the use of technology and computers including Microsoft Office Software (such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in occupational health and safety compliance.

  • Experience performing safety and health evaluations, audits, and inspections.

  • Preference given for any of the following certifications:

  • Associate Safety Professional ( ASP )

  • Certified Safety Professional ( CSP )

  • Certified Hazardous Material Manager ( CHMM )

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist ( CIH )

  • Other field related certifications

  • Progressive experience in Environmental Health and Safety in an academic setting.

  • Experience in developing and/or conducting training programs.

  • Experience in occupational and construction safety.

  • Bachelor’s degree with a preference for a related major in physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or a closely related field is preferred.
