Compensation Overview
The annual base salary range provided for this position is a nationwide market range and represents a broad range of salaries for this role across the country. The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. As part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits program, employees are also eligible for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What Is the Opportunity?
This position reports into the National Practice Lead - Loss Sensitive and Wrap Up. Working on behalf of the Specialty Practice, the incumbent is responsible for driving the profitability, growth, and retention strategies for the Loss Sensitive (LS) Construction (CNS) business within defined regions consistent with Construction, Energy, and Marine (CEM) objectives. Responsible for the implementation of underwriting execution, creating and engaging key distribution sources, engaging with key customers, and leading teams to meet needs of distribution and customers. Responsible for effective collaboration with regional leadership team to achieve CEM and Business Insurance objectives. Field dedicated LS MDs will have a dual reporting into the CEM RVP and this role.

What Will You Do?
Strategy and Business Results:
In partnership with local and multi-region leadership, and in accordance with specialized industry and practice, develops and executes strategic business plans and sets annual plan.
Jointly accountable for the profitability, growth, and retention of the LS book within assigned regions.
Develops new business opportunities by leading teams to thoroughly explore sources of LS business and potential prospects within our appetite.
Utilizes network to bring the right resources to an issue.
Works effectively with all levels to support the business.
Effectively drives results through Sales Strategy execution around Stewardship with existing customers, effective New Business pipeline management, Acquisition Plans, and Sales excellence.
Underwriting and Pricing:
Maintains appropriate specialization and awareness of industry trend. Attends specialized industry forums and associations, both locally and nationally. Understands local marketplace dynamics, competitor behaviors, and environment.
Understands, drives, and reinforces Loss Sensitive initiatives across regions.
Jointly accountable, with local leadership, for the results of the most complex, at risk, or hard to close deals as needed for the LS segment.
Brings consistency of LS strategy execution to all regions.
Engages with product strategy for issues impacting the LS portfolio of customers from a product or service perspective.
Participates in Portfolio CUREs, assessment of the line/industry, strategic direction.
Provides assistance in obtaining corporate support for underwriting needs required in assigned jurisdictions.
Increases ease of doing business by broadening perspective of local customer teams.
Talent Strategy:
Has an active and collaborative partnership with CEM RVP and HR on recruiting plans and staff development in order to attract, retain, and allocate top talent across regions of responsibility. Works closely with leaders on developing bench strength for key positions.
Staff management functions include, but are not limited to coaching, training, developing and performance management feedback in a supportive, team oriented, collaborative manner.
Identifies training needs, organization and delivery of training, including sales training.
Works with regional leadership to identify and address marketing and sales skill gaps within region, including with service partners.
Builds and maintains valued internal business partnerships within Business Insurance, the Enterprise, and external constituencies as appropriate.
Distribution Management:
Leads regional teams in the development and promotion of productive distributor relationships, including:
Understanding key personnel within distributor
Controlled business, targeted new business
Head-room opportunities
Will engage key distribution agents and specialists directly for the specialty practice on behalf of Travelers.
Effectively collaborates with local leadership on Distribution and Agency Management to optimize production results within the Specialty Practice/LS Construction.
Models, promotes and inspires behaviors inherent to a successful consultative marketing / sales culture.
Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
Bachelor’s, MBA or Master’s degree preferred.
Typically has 10+ years of relevant experience.
Loss sensitive knowledge and experience preferred, including experience with pricing tools, sales experience, and excellent customer service skills.
Experience developing people and driving optimal results through diverse teams at varying levels.
Thorough understanding of products, services and value proposition of Loss Sensitive Construction Business.
Demonstrated track record of strong execution and ability to drive results.
Demonstrated ability to influence strategic direction.
Advanced ability to communicate, influence and negotiate.
Ability to lead by example and make complex decisions that impact BI.
Proven ability to influence change and operate strategically in a matrix organization structure.
What is a Must Have?
- 10 years of underwriting experience required.
