Job Summary

The objective of the Basic American Foods Maintenance Mechanic Apprenticeship Program is to train and develop skilled Industrial Maintenance Mechanics in all phases of the industry. Apprentices will receive 8000 hours of on-the-job training over the course of 4 years, from an experienced mentor combined with 144 hours of company paid job related instruction per year of the apprenticeship. Upon the completion of the program the apprentice will receive a nationally recognized certification.

Work Process Schedule (4 Years)

During the term of apprenticeship, the Apprentice shall receive such instruction and experience, in all branches of the occupation, as is necessary to develop a practical and versatile worker.

Classroom and Online

Approximately 144 hours per year of apprenticeship.

Qualifications

Apprentices must not be less than 18 years of age.

Education/Experience

A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required. Applicants shall provide an official transcript(s) for high school and post high school education and training. GED records may be submitted if applicable.

Physical

Applicants will be physically capable of performing the essential functions of the apprenticeship program, with or without a reasonable accommodation, and without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of the individual or others.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear in both an office environment and a loud environment.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write various types of documents including, but not limited to, instructions, training outlines, and reports. Ability to effectively present information verbally in one-on-one to large group situations..

Reasoning Ability

Must be able to creatively apply experience and common sense to a variety of situations, processes, and people. Must be able to make technical decisions and support the staff on technical issues. Possess the ability to manage several projects concurrently. Be able to plan work, order parts, and coordinate downtime to complete work orders. Be able to resolve issues which may include conflicts between employees, equipment malfunctions, and variations in operating conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to hot and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally must access high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and extreme heat.
