Function of Position:
TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program that serves students overcoming obstacles in higher education, including limited income, first-generation to college, and disability. The primary objective of this position is to increase the persistence, graduation, and transfer of SSS participants. Accordingly, the role of the Student Support Advisor is to deliver comprehensive advising services and coordinate student development activities.
The Student Support Advisor helps students persist in their education and develop the skills needed to earn an Associate Degree or Certificate. This role provides holistic support, using student development theories and coaching models to foster engagement, resilience, and self-direction. The advisor manages a caseload of participants, monitors academic progress, and connects students to on- and off-campus resources. Additionally, this position supports the planning and implementation of academic, social, and cultural programs in alignment with SSS program regulations and goals.
*This is a temporary, grant funded position that may be renewed annually contingent upon availability of grant funding and performance reviews. This position is eligible for paid time off and benefits.
Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:
Academic Advising & Coaching:
- Advise students on course selection, registration, degree planning, and transfer options.
- Monitor academic progress, assist with overcoming barriers, and provide proactive support.
- Help students develop study skills, time management strategies, and self-advocacy.
Student Support & Engagement:
- Identify and connect students to campus resources such as tutoring, mentoring, and career services.
- Develop and facilitate student success workshops on topics like financial literacy, academic skills, and personal development.
- Assist students in completing financial aid applications (FAFSA, TAP) and understanding financial aid policies.
- Plan and lead student engagement activities, including cultural events, leadership development opportunities, and college visits.
Program Implementation & Collaboration:
- Maintain accurate student records, advising notes, and case management documentation in systems such as Starfish and Degree Works.
- Work closely with faculty, administrators, and student services staff to provide coordinated support.
- Support TRIO grant compliance by contributing to reporting, assessment, and program evaluation efforts.

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field.
- At least two years of experience working with first-generation, low-income, or students with disabilities in an academic or student support setting.
- Strong advising, coaching, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students.
- Experience in student development, retention strategies, and academic success initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience with TRIO programs, financial aid advising, or transfer support.
- Familiarity with academic support systems (e.g., Starfish, Degree Works, Banner).
- Knowledge of student development theory and best practices for working with diverse student populations.
- Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently
Additional Information:
Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $42,000 to $44,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.
