University of Rochester Lab Clinical Support Tech I in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Performs functions associated with patient information processing for specimen handling and account registration. Completes the tasks of registration, order entry, and batch receiving. Responsible for functions being completed in an accurate, efficient, and customer friendly manner. May be a resource to new staff.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Registration: Enters patient demographic and insurance information in an efficient and accurate manner. Enters information into the electronic medical record. Assures completion of all required fields. Understands required information on requisitions. Follows all procedures.

  2. Accessioning Specimens: logs patient and test information from requisition into the LIS. Understands how to utilize UR Medicine Labs Test Menu and verifies acceptable criteria are met. Understands how to read requisitions from different sources.

  3. Specimen Receiving: Receives pre-accessioned specimens into the LIS from varying sources. Reconciles batch manifests and accounts for all specimens. Identifies specimen requirements and documents discrepancies or unacceptable criteria in the LIS.

  4. Customer Interaction: Ability to interact in person and on telephone with providers, physicians, customers, and internal lab personnel. Must be able to assess the urgency of a situation and determine the appropriate routing. Utilizes LIS for inputting complaints, documenting specimen requests and specimen integrity issues.

  5. Training: Provides training to other laboratory personnel as appropriate.

  6. Other tasks as assigned: May cross cover other departments as needed, competencies must be verified by department before performance of any of these duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Enrolled in high school or graduate and at least 16 years of age required. Some work experience required in a health care setting or customer service field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; or successful completion of an approved educational training program (eg. BOCES, East High); Medical terminology experience preferred. Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities: Demonstrated ability to word process documents and enter data into a database; Demonstrated skills related to achievement of customer satisfaction; Demonstrates the ICARE values to patient, families and staff; Ability to act as a resource to less experienced staff.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 16.54 - $ 22.33 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
