Avangrid Service Company Manager - Smart Metering in Rochester, New York

Position Information:

LOCATIONS: Augusta, ME; Portland, ME; Rochester, NY; Binghamton, NY; or Orange, CT

SALARY RANGE: The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from $122,600 - $168,700.

Job Summary

The Smart Metering department under Avangrid's Operational Smart Grids organization is responsible for strategy, planning, operation, and compliance of advanced metering systems and field networks covering over 1.5 million meters, primarily Advanced Metering Infrastructure ("AMI"), across operating companies in the states of Maine, Connecticut, and New York. AMI is considered a foundational technology for grid modernization. This position reports to the Director of Smart Metering and will be responsible for managing Smart Metering's Maine-based AMI network operations, meter engineering, and advanced metering systems management teams. The position requires close collaboration with Smart Metering peers in Connecticut and New York and other groups, particularly IT, Customer Service, Electric Operations, and other departments under Operational Smart Grids (e.g., Control Systems & Automation and Telecommunications).

Major Responsibilities

  • General Management: work with the Director of Smart Metering and peers on annual budgets, strategic direction and long-term planning, team objectives, asset management, performance management, and contractor management
  • AMI network operations and advanced metering systems management (e.g., AMI Head-end System, AMI Meter Data Management System, MV-90 xi system): manages and supports the Maine team on tactical planning; field network deployment, troubleshooting, lifecycle management, and performance optimization; systems integration, monitoring, enhancements, and upgrades; daily system operations (e.g., meter data collection, remote orders execution, exceptions management); and meter data analytics
  • Meter engineering: manages and supports the Maine team on developing meter programs and company standards, updating technical handbooks, testing and evaluating meter products, providing systems and construction-related technical support, and designing metering solutions
  • Coordinate with meter field operations on meter asset management, testing, standards implementation, and procurement
  • Oversee Smart Metering initiatives and projects
  • Promote Smart Metering's leadership in the utility industry by advancing the team's technical knowledge and representing at technical conferences and user groups
  • Support Disaster Recovery, storm events, and other emergency events
  • Manage vendor relationships and contractual requirements
  • Ensure key process and design documentation for the AMI environment is updated as needed
  • Lead and facilitate training plans and knowledge transfer for team members

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical area such as Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or Economics with at least 7 years of relevant experience required
  • Solid technical background with experience in three or more of the following preferred:
    • AMI Head-end Systems, Meter Data Management Systems, MV-90 xi, and/or related metering systems
    • Meter engineering
    • Telecommunications engineering and/or field operations
    • Operating Systems (e.g., Linux, Unix, Windows)
    • Databases (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server)
    • High-level network engineering and security concepts
    • Programming languages (e.g., Python, SQL, JavaScript)
    • Mapping software (e.g., ESRI GIS)
  • Experience with SAP required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Data analytics, system troubleshooting, and process improvement experience required
  • Demonstrated track record of building cross-functional relationships with key stakeholders and leading teams to solve complex problems required
  • Knowledge of electric and/or gas utility operations required
  • Advanced knowledge of metering, including AMI, required
  • Previous work experience in IT or operational technology (OT) preferred

The person in this position could be based at any Avangrid Service Company office across Maine, New York, and Connecticut. Avangrid employees may be assigned a system emergency role and in the event of a system emergency, may be required to work outside of their regular schedule/job duties.
