Indian Health Service Medical Support Assistant (Patient Registration) in Rosebud, South Dakota

Summary The position is located in the Patient Registration Section of the Business Office (BO) of the Rosebud Service Unit in Rosebud, SD. This section provides registration and eligibility services, which are the key points for interaction with patients to obtain and process demographic and insurance information for alternate resources, purchased/referred care, and private/commercial insurance. Responsibilities Interviews patients to obtain pertinent patient registration information i.e., demographic and insurance information. Assists patients in completing new or updated forms for the RPMS Patient Registration System. Determines the eligibility of patients seeking health care, who have not previously been treated at the Facility. Maintains, key-enters, updates, and verifying all alternate resource data necessary for patient registration and for accurate billing. Assists with making appointments for patients with all the providers, according to the service unit's appointment policy. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-4: One (1) year of general experience equivalent to the GS-03 grade level AND/OR two (2) years above high school. GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level AND/OR four (4) years above high school. GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Examples of Specialized Experience. GS-5: Interview patient to obtain personal demographic information, assist patient with form completion, determine eligibility for alternate resources for health care, verify information into electronic health record, scan and file information into electronic health record, enter patient demographic and insurance information into an automated patient registration system; greets patients and their family members, answer questions, apply state laws concerning vital statistic records and birth/death certificates. GS-6: Organize patient records, extract medical information and review records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency with medical facility requirements; record data involving patient appointments, admissions and discharge/transfer information using the medical facility's automated and/or manual medical records system; respond to changing priorities that frequently depend upon the urgency of the situation. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Education There are no education requirements. Additional Information Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Your Human Resources Specialist will provide a list of documents acceptable as vaccination proof and instructions on how to submit your vaccination documentation or how to request a medical or religious exemption, if needed. This position has promotion potential to the GS-6 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
