About The Opportunity
Amentum provides client-oriented solutions across our environment, energy, and defence businesses. With a strong order book and a diverse, exciting portfolio of projects across the UK and internationally, we need to expand our team of environmental specialists across multiple disciplines required to deliver a project lifecycle-from new build and operations through to decommissioning and site end use. We offer opportunities for significant career advancement, attractive remuneration, and flexible working, as well as leadership and client relationship role development.
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Land Quality Consultant to join our established team working across our environment, energy and defence businesses. In this role, you will provide technical leadership on complex contaminated land projects, support the development of our growing team, and build strong relationships with clients.
We offer flexible working arrangements (a mix of office-based and home working). This role can be based in Harwell, Rotherham, Cumbria or Birchwood.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership on land quality assessment and remediation projects, ensuring robust methodologies and high-quality outputs. Lead and mentor consultants and junior staff, providing guidance and training to develop their skills and maintain a high-performing team.
Project Management: Oversee project scope, budgets, and schedules, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client's satisfaction.
Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a key point of contact for clients, regulators, and other stakeholders - communicating project progress, addressing concerns, and managing expectations through regular engagement.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all project activities comply with relevant UK environmental legislation and industry standards (including nuclear sector requirements), while upholding the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) performance.
Business Development: Identify and pursue new business opportunities. Lead high-value bids and proposals, and cultivate strong client relationships. Represent Amentum at industry events and conferences, sharing thought leadership and expanding professional networks.
Strategic Contribution: Contribute to the strategic direction of the land quality service line by implementing best practices, improving processes, and championing innovative technologies and methods in contaminated land management.
Here's What You'll Need
Below are the qualifications and experience that we’re seeking in applicants. We understand that not everyone will meet every single requirement, so if you believe you have most of the relevant experience and strong potential to succeed in this role, we’d love to hear from you.
Contaminated Land Expertise: Extensive (10+ Years) experience in contaminated land investigation, characterisation, and remediation in the UK - including developing Conceptual Site Models (CSMs), conducting qualitative and quantitative risk assessments for human health and controlled waters, and designing effective remediation strategies for complex contaminated sites. Experience of applying the Environment Agency’s Remedial Targets Methodology would be advantageous.
Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of UK environmental legislation and guidance relevant to land quality (e.g. Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Environmental Permitting Regulations) and familiarity with the planning process as it relates to contaminated land management.
Waste Management: Strong understanding of waste classification and materials management for soils and groundwater, including practical application of the CL:AIRE Definition of Waste Code of Practice (DoWCoP). Holding (or working towards) Qualified Person (QP) status under DoWCoP is an advantage.
Ground Gas & Vapour: Experience in assessing ground gas and vapour risks, including use of best-practice guidance such as CIRIA C665, and in designing appropriate gas protection or vapour mitigation measures.
Stakeholder Engagement: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience liaising effectively with clients, regulators (such as the Environment Agency, SEPA or local authorities), and other stakeholders to build positive working relationships.
Business Development: Proven ability to contribute to business development - including identifying opportunities, writing proposals, winning work, and expanding client accounts or service offerings.
HSE Commitment: A strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence, with the ability to champion and embed a positive safety culture in all project activities.
Education: A degree in Environmental Science, Geoscience, Engineering or a related field is required (MSc or PhD preferred).
Professional Qualifications: Chartered status (e.g. CGeol, CEnv, CIWEM or similar) and/or Specialist in Land Condition ( SiLC ) accreditation (or actively working towards these) is highly desirable.
Other: Willingness to travel to sites across the UK as needed, and a full UK driving licence.
This is a senior-level position offering an exciting opportunity to shape and lead contaminated land projects within high hazard industrial sectors. If you are a driven land quality professional with the technical expertise and leadership skills to excel as a Principal Consultant, we encourage you to apply and join our growing team.
