The Role

The Senior Director Labor Relations, reporting to the Vice President, Human Resources, will serve as the critical subject matter expert for all union relationships for the Company.

The Senior Director serves as the designated Lumen Bargaining Agent with respect to all escalated matters covered by the Company’s collective bargaining agreement with CWA District 7. This will include negotiating mid-term contract changes, strategic dispute resolution with District 7 leadership, labor arbitration case handling and advocacy, and first or second chair negotiation responsibilities. In addition, the Senior Director will advise, counsel, and influence internal stakeholders up to and including the Senior Vice President executives who manage union-represented employees, and will also be responsible for developing, supporting, and/or executing business-impacting and business-enabling, cross-functional initiatives.

The union-represented population for which the Senior Director is directly responsible consists of approximately 5,000 employees covered by the District 7 collective bargaining agreement. The Senior Director will also manage the Senior Manager Labor Relations, who will be directly responsible for managing all aspects of the collectively-bargained relationship Lumen maintains with CWA Local Unions covering hundreds of employees in 10+ collective bargaining agreements.

The Main Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty:

  • Independently handle all escalated matters covered by the Company’s collective bargaining agreement with CWA District 7, including mid-term contract changes and disputes with the CWA.

  • Independently handle and manage all arbitration files, including advise and counsel to business leaders, selection of arbitrator, through case preparation, presentation at hearing, and brief writing (and/or drafting and execution of settlement agreements), through conclusion of the file.

  • Manage all aspects of the collectively-bargained relationship Lumen maintains with CWA Local Unions covering hundreds of employees in 10+ collective bargaining agreements.

  • Act as First or Second Chair in major contract negotiations with CWA District 7.

  • In collaboration with Labor Counsel, Labor Relations, and other Human Resources teams, anticipate and assess legal and other risks to the Company, and devises appropriate measures to avoid or reduce those risks while furthering the successful execution of the Company’s strategies and goals.

  • Develop, support, and/or execute business-impacting and business-enabling, cross-functional initiatives.

  • Assist with the development and management of policies and procedures regarding labor issues.

  • Develop forward-looking strategies for the efficient administration of the grievance and arbitration process.

  • Supervise the Senior Manager Labor Relations, who will be responsible for managing all aspects of the collectively-bargained relationship Lumen maintains with CWA Local Unions covering hundreds of employees in 10+ collective bargaining agreements.

  • Act as First or Second Chair in major contract negotiations with CWA District 7.

  • Other projects may be assigned.

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • Significant experience conducting labor arbitrations and/or matters proceeding before the NLRB as a first chair/lead counsel.

  • Extensive first chair negotiations experience.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide concise, accurate, user-friendly, and timely advice to non-lawyers

  • Superior interpersonal, influencing, and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to identify, influence, and lead dispute resolution opportunities.

  • Maintain productive working relationships with union leadership and advocates.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and demonstrate flexibility.

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear, concise, organized manner.

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and admission to the bar in one or more jurisdiction in which Lumen operates strongly preferred

  • 10+ years of substantive traditional labor experience

  • Travel requirement – Up to 25%

Compensation

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

Location Based Pay Ranges

$171,447 - $228,596 in these states: AL AR AZ FL GA IA ID IN KS KY LA ME MO MS MT ND NE NM OH OK PA SC SD TN UT VT WI WV WY

$180,020 - $240,026 in these states: CO HI MI MN NC NH NV OR RI

$188,592 - $251,456 in these states: AK CA CT DC DE IL MA MD NJ NY TX VA WA
