GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general direction; operates medium and heavy construction/maintenance equipment; performs skilled and

semi-skilled manual labor in the maintenance and operation of the Salina municipal solid waste landfill; services

and makes minor repairs to equipment; provides over-site of the facility and crew in the absence of a supervisor.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

o Provides over-site of the facility & crew in the absence of a supervisor.

o Assists other employees as a crew-leader in the absence of a supervisor.

o Performs skilled work in horizontal construction & landfill operations.

o Operates compactors, bulldozers, front-end loaders, motor graders, self-propelled scrapers and similar

equipment at the municipal solid waste landfill and in various assignments.

o Moves, levels, compacts and covers solid waste; assists in the planning to fill cells.

o Looks for and prevents hazardous waste from entering into landfill; extinguishes fires at landfill.

o Welds, services & makes repairs to equipment; performs maintenance checks on equipment.

o Maintains landfill roads; mows grounds.

o Prepares minimal records of own activities, including burial logs and special wastes.

o Performs overtime as required and performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION - RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:

Occasionally performs over-site of the facility and employees in the absence of a supervisor. Assists supervisors

with orientation and training of new employees.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

o High school diploma or G.E.D.

o Two (2) years of progressively responsible construction and maintenance work operating light and medium

equipment (tractor, loader, skid steer).

o One (1) year of experience operating heavy equipment (dozer, compacter, earth scraper).

o Horizontal land construction work preferred; must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.

o Must possess a valid Kansas drivers license at hire.

o Must possess commercial drivers license (CDL) with air brake & tanker endorsements or obtain within one (1)

year from the start date of employment.

The City of Salina will pay enrollment fees and hourly wages for employees to attend Class B CDL training at

Salina Area Technical College.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS:

None.
