Job Summary
The College of Education (CoE) seeks a highly motivated, creative and detail-oriented communications intern to work up to 18/hours a week writing press releases, CoE newsletters, and assigned articles for two College of Education publications, the biannual Utah Education magazine and the annual Impact Report, and occasionally writing web-friendly copy for the CoE site. The intern will be responsible for organizing, compiling, designing and writing internal newsletters. The intern may proofread marketing materials and engage in other research and writing tasks as assigned. The writing intern will report to the communications manager and work with graphic design and social media interns to ensure cohesion across marketing materials.
Responsibilities
Conducts interviews, gathers relevant quotes, and researches community organizations and educational initiatives to write accurate and timely stories about the CoE.
Visits onsite activities and events to gather materials needed for stories.
Writes stories, articles and/or press releases on CoE events, faculty, programs, awards, alumni, community engagement, etc.
Responsible for organizing, compiling, and writing the monthly internal newsletter.
Engages in an editing process with marketing and revises pieces under their guidance as needed.
Assists in writing web-friendly copy for various landing pages on the CoE site. Researches and reaches out to faculty, relevant staff and stakeholders to ensure accuracy and relevance of web content.
Proofreads various forms of marketing materials as needed.
Adheres to university-wide marketing guidelines and best practices.
Collaborates with the design team as needed.
Attends a weekly marketing meeting in person.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Current University of Utah student.
Interest and/or experience in writing, blogging, conducting interviews and working with an editor.
Ability to submit at least two writing samples.
Preferences
Must be able to work 15-18 hours per week for a minimum of 2 semesters.
Must participate in weekly marketing strategy meetings.
Ability to work effectively both in-office at the University of Utah and remotely.
Experience and Skills:
Previous professional work experience in writing.
Understanding of how to use the G-Suite platforms.
Ability to work as part of a broader team and independently.
Ability to use Microsoft Word and other Microsoft resources.
Able to manage multiple deadlines and projects in collaboration with team members.
Responsive and effective communicator across different channels (phone, video conference, and email).
