Job Summary

The Translational Neurotherapeutics Lab in the Department of Population Health Sciences, Division of Health System Innovation and Research at the University of Utah School of Medicine is accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellow interested in gaining training and experience in design, evaluation, optimization, and dissemination of digital medicine solutions for psychiatric disorders. This is a unique opportunity to train in both neurobiology of aging and mental health, (including psychiatric and neuropsychological assessment, neurobiological bases of mood disorders, digital interventions for mood disorders, clinical trial administration etc) and in serious game development, (including computer science, engineering, participatory design, and human computer interaction). This position will also provide mentorship in the administration of NIMH -funded multi-site randomized controlled clinical trials of digital medicine, and in interaction with industry partners. Consistent with the objectives, the primary responsibilities of the postdoctoral fellows will include the delivery of neuroplasticity-based computerized cognitive remediation to older adults with major depressive disorder ( MDD ) who have failed to respond to first line treatments. A secondary aim of this project is to study “usability” of the intervention and how implementation can influence efficacy. The Postdoctoral fellow will be trained to administer the intervention, and supervise research analysts in their assessment of participants. Additional responsibilities of the fellowship include collaboration with engineering colleagues, data-driven design optimization, leading participatory design, analysis of data and preparation of manuscripts resulting from the project.

Responsibilities

This training program is co-led by Dr. Sarah Shizuko Morimoto a neuropsychologist and director of the Neurotherapeautics Lab, and Dr. Roger Altizer, Director of Digital Medicine and founder of the Entertainment Arts and Engineering department at the University of Utah; the top-rated gaming graduate program in the US.

Fellows will be expected to collaborate on Drs. Morimoto and Altizer’s projects as lead and co-author of manuscripts, contributor to new grant applications, and the conduct of ongoing NIMH -funded research projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferences

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in geriatric psychiatry, neurobiology of mood disorders, neurobiology of aging, digital mental health solutions, and/or clinical trial administration. Comfort with technology and internet-based data collection is also desirable. Applicants with Spanish language fluency are strongly preferred.
