Job Summary

TheUtah Clinical & Translational Science Institute ( CTSI )seeks a PS Nurse Manager for the CTSI Clinical Research Unit ( CRU ). Under minimal supervision, responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the management of the CRU staffing, customer service, and business management operations. Acts as a catalyst between the CTSI and its customers and staff to ensure continuity and quality of clinical research services and care. The CTSI’s sources include federal funding, institutional support, tuition, and service recharge revenue.

This position will have to report responsibility to Ms. Dixie D. Thompson and will work most directly with the CRU Quality Nursing Supervisor to lead CRU daily operations and provide collaborative CRU management.

Responsibilities

  1. Forecasts develops and implements policies and procedures in the areas of customer service, staff management, research protocol performance, and business goals and objectives that are consistent with the University of Utah’s policies.

  2. Markets and promotes new and existing programs and services to internal and external customers.

  3. Participates in University-wide committees to establish and facilitate improved clinical research customer service standards and administrative plans and policies.

  4. Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community, institutional, and partner relationships and processes to support the research enterprise.

  5. Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns, and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through and process improvement.

  6. Develops departmental strategies consistent with the assigned department’s continuous quality improvement program.

  7. Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and ongoing staff performance evaluations.

  8. Manages and ensures adequate and competent staffing of the CRU , including (but not limited to) performance evaluations, interviewing, hiring, counseling employees, tracking and reporting resource utilization, invoicing, and cost-effective business practices.

Problem-Solving

Often selects from a predetermined list of alternatives and sometimes recommends or changes policy and procedure based upon the amount of discretion given by the department. Problems would be referred to superiors based upon predetermined guidelines set by the department.

Comments

The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.

Nearly Continuously: Office environment in clinical setting.

Seldom: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids)

Minimum Qualifications

A Utah RN license is required for this position. Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (2 years related work experience may be substituted for 1 year of education) and four years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Preferences Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences

  • Previous Nurse Manager experience or senior Clinical Research Nursing experience is required.

  • Specific experience in a University of Utah Hospital Clinical Nurse Coordinator or other senior nursing role may be substituted.

  • A Master’s degree in nursing may be preferred.
