Job Summary

The Pornillos Lab in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Sr Laboratory Specialist to provide expert support for several NIH -funded projects, by conducting cell biology and molecular virology experiments. At a minimum, this position requires previous experience in: maintenance and propagation of cell lines, vector production (including plasmid-based and lentivirus-based vectors), transfection and transduction methods, and flow cytometry. Familiarity with biosafety level 2 ( BSL -2) practices is also required. Previous experience is CRISPR /Cas9 editing will be advantageous. This position requires the ability to conduct experiments independently with minimal day-to-day supervision. Ability to work as a member of a research team is essential. Original scientific contributions are expected as a result of acquired experience as a seasoned professional.

Responsibilities

Experimental responsibilities include:

1) Maintaining and propagating cell lines for cell biology and virology experiments in a range of formats (96-well to liter-scale)

2) Designing, cloning, and producing plasmid and viral vectors at ug to mg scale (maxi-preps)

3) Performing large-scale transfections to overexpress proteins of interest

4) Performing pilot protein purification experiments 5) Producing virus-like particles and pseudo-virions in uL to 100 mL scale

5) Performing infectivity assays

Other responsibilities will be assigned as the needs of the projects evolve.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required, or Master’s degree plus two or more years of experience. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
