  • Proven experience in tax compliance and strong understanding of relevant tax laws and regulations.

  • Experience analyzing and interpreting and communicating federal, state, and local regulations and laws related to higher education.

  • Knowledge of generally accepted fund accounting principles.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills needed to identify and resolve problems related to tax issues, complete assigned projects, and prioritize workload.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with the ability to perform advanced math

  • Professional communication skills to work with other offices across campus, as well as work collaboratively with other team members.

  • Organization and time management skills needed to complete multiple tasks simultaneously with high attention to detail.

  • Willingness to develop new knowledge, skills, and abilities in a changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in tax accounting, business or public administration, or related field.

  • Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Job Description

The Tax Analyst will be responsible for serving as the University’s primary information resource on tax compliance matters. The selected candidate will act as a liaison between Texas State departments and various taxing authorities.

Job Duties

  • Research taxability inquiries, provide tax-related guidance, and prepare written responses to ruling requests.

  • Develop procedures and training for staff to enable them to carry out their responsibilities; to include, but not limited to: Unrelated business income ( UBIT ), Texas sales/use tax, 1098-T reporting, 1099 reporting, tax compliance for nonresident alien employees/students/independent contractors, fringe benefits and employment tax, worker’s classification (employee vs independent contractor)

  • Overall responsibility and accountability for payments processed through payroll and accounts payable for tax compliance with federal, state, and local tax rules and regulations. This includes working with the appropriate departments to identify and properly capture payments for 1042, 1099, 1098, etc. for federal, state, and other related tax filings.

  • Review vendor W-8 Ben and W-8 BEN -E forms for foreign persons and communicate with the department to discuss tax implications. Review independent contractor determination worksheets.

  • Responsible for filing of the Internal Revenue Service forms, including but not limited to Forms 990, 990-T, and related filings; IRS Forms 1042-S, 1099, 941, 1098-T, 1095-C, and related reporting.

  • Maintain updated tax information on department’s website.

  • Stay updated on tax laws and regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
