PhD on Predictive Process Machine Control

In semiconductor manufacturing no processing machine runs continuously yielding the same results. A key part for the process and equipment experts is to adjust the machines to perform as required. The change of the machine behavior over time can have different causes, like machine part degradation or consumable consumption and is reset by maintenance works. This reoccurring tuning of processing machines is a requirement for a stable process result. Tuning a machine is done by adjusting specific machine settings. This tuning procedure usually consists of multiple iterations where first specific test material is processed and evaluated and second the machine is adjusted based on the results. Once the machine yields good enough results this loop ends and the machine can be used to process critical material. Finding the optimal machine settings with as few as possible iterations is an important field of research and the latest advances in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence indicate the possibility for improvements. The goal of this work shall be the summary and testing of state-of-the-art methods in real-world applications as well as development of new methods tailored to the needs of the semiconductor industry, so in this work Machine Learning approaches are to be developed to enable process experts to use ML and AI for machine tuning.

The contract for this position is setup for 3 years with a possibility to extend by one additional year, if required. We are looking for a research associate who wants to take a coordinating role in a joint project with other partners from academia and industry and in aligning their research work to the requirements of later mass production. You will systematically document and present the results in regular reports. GF supports the publication of scientific results in leading journals and the protection of intellectual property by the submission of patents.
