DESCRIPTION OF WORK An Adult Basic Education Teacher prepares lesson plans, develops instruction, and selects materials needed for educating adult offenders in a classroom setting. You will assess student readiness and capabilities for learning, assign and review homework, administer tests, and evaluate progress. A key goal is helping offenders achieve proficiency in courses such as Adult Basic Education (ABE), Commonwealth Secondary Diploma (CSD), General Education Development (GED), and English-as-a-Second Language (ESL).

Work Schedule and Additional Information: Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week. Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Please note, selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $63,053.00 (before taxes). This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55. You will receive further communication regarding this position via email. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: Four years of paraprofessional experience assisting educational staff in a classroom setting that includes or is supplemented by one year of experience providing classroom instruction or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education; or A bachelor's degree in education which includes or is supplemented by successful completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum; or An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes or is supplemented by completion of an institution-approved teaching practicum, one year of experience providing classroom instruction, or possession of an active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Special Requirements: This position is assigned to an institution that houses state mandated school-age students and requires a valid and active Instructional 1 or 2 certification issued by then Pennsylvania Department of Education. When no candidates possess the named certifications, the selected candidate must be eligible for an Emergency Permit issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education that is appropriate to the position. Employees assigned to an institution that houses state mandated school-age students, and who were hired based on eligibility for an Emergency Permit, must obtain a valid and active Instructional Level 1 or 2 certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
