Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of directly related full-time experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four (4) full-time years may be considered. Two (2) years of full-time sea-time experience operating boats, including vessel maintenance. USCG 50 Ton (minimum) Masters of Near Coastal Waters Vessel Operator's License and valid TWIC credentials. Must possess CPR and AED Certification. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Marine Sciences, Environmental Sciences or a related field. Additional years (3+) years of full-time sea-time experience operating boats, including vessel maintenance. Experience with gas outboard maintenance. Experience repairing fishing nets and related ground tackle. Knowledge of local Long Island bays/estuaries. Knowledge of aquaria care and maintenance.Brief Description of Duties:
The Vessel Mate provides operations assistance (as crew and as captain of small boats) in Southampton and occasionally at Stony Brook in support of SoMAS scientific research and educational programs, for which night and weekend work (multiple-day deployments) may be required. The Vessel Mate is responsible for operating a fleet of small vessels in Southampton in support of faculty, staff, students, and other scientific and educational parties associated with the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences - Stony Brook University. The Mate will share responsibility for the day-to-day operational needs and various boat maintenance tasks, and will provide assistance to research parties prior to, during, and after cruises with handling and deployment of shipboard and research equipment, and handling of experimental materials and animals. The incumbent will assist the Southampton Vessel Fleet Manager in ensuring the vessels and facilities are maintained and in proper/optimal operating capacity. The selected candidate will have excellent communication skills, a professional, customer-service oriented demeanor, and have the ability to work independently as well as with a team. This position also requires the ability to undertake fieldwork in varying conditions and a mechanical aptitude, being comfortable handling sampling gear for fieldwork processes (i.e., pulling in the sampling gear by hand, hauling sampling buckets on and off the boat, carrying needed supplies to and from the boat and/or van, etc.).

  • Vessel Operator:
    • Serve as captain of small (11' to 44') vessels in accordance with USCG regulations, maintaining the integrity of SoMAS research and educational goals, and ensuring respectful care for natural habitats and wildlife.
    • Serve as crew in operation of SoMAS Boats. Be familiar with shipboard safety rules and procedures and ensure safe boat operation and safety of personnel.
    • Operate deck gear in the deployment and retrieval of sampling equipment.
    • Assist at SoMAS Stony Brook as directed by Supervisor, serving on and captaining boats stationed through the SoMAS Stony Brook main fleet as needed.
  • Vessel Maintenance and Program Support:
    • Assist in maintaining all boats, engines, and gear in safe and sound condition to the highest maritime standards, including scraping and painting, complying with USCG regulations as applicable.
    • Assist with boat transport, storage, and maintenance.
    • Assist with the Boat Donation Program. Perform field inspections of potential donations.
    • Perform additional routine shipboard and shore-side duties as directed by supervisor, including participating in special events.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
