Victims of Violence Intervention Program Shelter Advocate in Spearfish, South Dakota

Victims of Violence Intervention Program, operating Artemis House Shelter, is seeking a full-time advocate to join our team.

The Advocate will work closely with survivors of domestic and sexual violence to gain access to resources and services needed to heal, recover and establish a successful life following violence. The advocate will primarily provide advocacy services to individuals who are currently residing in the shelter.

Recommended Qualifications: Bachelors Degree (Human Services or related field preferred.)

Duties, Responsibilities and Expectations:

1. Assist survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and/or dating violence in accessing any services or support they need to recover following an instance of violence. Provide services to clients in seeking shelter to include:

o Assisting clients in accessing financial assistance and obtaining housing

o Assisting clients in navigating criminal justice and court proceedings, including obtaining protection orders

o Providing emergency room advocacy for clients in need of medical attention

o Identifying safe housing

o Safety planning with clients

o Transporting clients where needed

o Connecting clients to outside services and community resources

o Facilitate weekly in shelter support group to include life skills and outside resource providers

2. Coordinated Community Response and Networking

o Network and build effective working relationships between VVIP and relevant stakeholders such as: law enforcement, the medical community, other community service providers, schools and public agencies

oAssist in the development and collaboration of community services to meet client needs

3. Awareness and Education

o Design and implement an outreach and awareness strategy to ensure the public in the service area are aware of VVIP services, reach survivors in need and contribute to public awareness about domestic and sexual violence prevention

4. Promote and lead in shelter Support Group for DV/SA survivors

  1. Assist with shelter and on-site crisis work as deemed necessary.

  2. Identify program needs, opportunities for employee training, volunteer recruitment and communicate suggestions to Program Director

  3. Assist with crisis line coverage on a rotation basis

8.. Assist with client management, record keeping and other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Physical demands: While performing the job duties, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Advocates are expected to be on call to attend to crisis intervention work at least one weekend per m nth and one night a week. Starting base rate of pay is $18.25/hr with potential for increase DOE/DOQ.
