Thermo Fisher Scientific's Ion Chromatography and Sample Preparation (ICSP) team presents an opportunity for a Senior Manager of R&D Mechanical Engineering looking to make a significant impact and lead innovations that solves scientific challenges. How will you make an impact?

We are looking for a Senior Manager to join our Research and Development team. This position will be based in Sunnyvale, CA, and will be managing a team of Mechanical Engineers driving innovation in instruments and consumables.

As a R&D senior leader, this position supports initiatives to deliver growth for the business and set technical strategies to influence the direction of product development portfolio. Also, ensure the alignment, accountability and communication needed for effective execution of new product development and sustaining projects.

What will you do?

  • Developing and implementing strategic plans and objectives for the team to meet project goals and timelines.

  • Coordinating the design, development, and testing of mechanical systems, components, and prototypes.

  • Providing technical mentorship and expertise to the team, ensuring consistency to industry standards and best practices.

  • Collaborating with multi-functional teams, such as other R&D departments, product management and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of mechanical engineering solutions into the overall product development process.

  • Conducting risk assessments and implementing mitigation strategies to address potential challenges or issues during the development process.

  • Managing project budgets and resources effectively, optimizing productivity and efficiency.

  • Supervising industry trends and advancements in mechanical engineering, and incorporating innovative technologies and methodologies into the R&D process.

  • Ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and standards.

  • Mentoring and developing team members, encouraging a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

  • Collaborating with external partners, suppliers, and vendors to source materials, components, and equipment.

  • Participating in technical reviews, presenting project updates and findings to senior management and stakeholders.

  • Identifying and implementing process improvements to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the mechanical engineering function within the R&D department.

  • Maintaining accurate documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and project reports.

How will you get here?

Education

  • BS is required, preferably in Mechanical Engineering; MS is preferred.

Experience

  • 12+ years of relevant experience.

  • 5+ years of successfully leading and managing R&D teams; including hiring, training, and performance management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in leading and managing R&D projects from conception to commercialization.

  • Experience doing 3D CAD modeling, preferably CREO/Windchill.

  • Knowledge of FEA and its application in the design process (e.g. Simulate, Ansys, or other).

  • Strong knowledge of common manufacturing processes and design standards, including machined and molded thermoplastics, sheet metal, and machined metals.

  • Experience with a PLM system through all stages of a product life cycle, including BOM creation, ECOs, ECRs, etc.

  • Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions to overcome challenges and achieve project objectives.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in California is $163,100.00–$225,000.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
