Pacific Lutheran University General Maintenance Technician II (Boiler) in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

Full-time; Thursday-Monday, 1:00pm-9:30pm

General Description:

Perform a variety of maintenance duties to include electrical, plumbing, mechanical, boilers, roofing and gutter repairs, lighting indoor/outdoor, window and blind repair, fire extinguishers, fire risers. Lock hardware, and minor carpentry to meet general maintenance needs on campus. Reports to Maintenance Lead/Plumber.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Perform minor electrical and plumbing repairs.
  • Secure damaged windows and coordinate replacement with outside contracts.
  • Replace building lights including lamp and ballast as needed.
  • Assist Electrician with indoor/outdoor lighting repairs.
  • Assist Plumber with water filter replacements
  • Assist Building Engineers with boiler checks.
  • Make minor repairs to door hardware and replace lock cores.
  • Contain roof leaks and/or make minor roof repairs on all campus facilities.
  • Provide back-up in other areas as needed.
  • Perform building fire extinguisher checks and schedule annual inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and written) with internal and external customers.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work well as an individual, as an active member of a team, and without close supervision.
  • Must be able to effectively use hand tools and power tools required for maintenance trades.
  • Proficiency using a multimeter for testing for voltage and amperage, etc.
  • Ability to use scaffolding, ladders, safety harnesses, and high lift operation (training provided).
  • Well organized, able to prioritize work, and make decisions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma orĀ  GED.
  • One year of experience in building maintenance or similar craft. Education including technical school and/or apprenticeship can substitute for experience.
  • Valid driver's license (Must have had a valid driver's license for at least 2 years).
  • WA State Class IV Boiler Fireman certification, or the ability to acquire a Boiler IV certification within approximately 12 months of employment. (Training will be provided for selected candidates, if not already acquired).
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks, driving abstract check, and pass PLU's Driver's Certification Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • General computer knowledge.
  • Current boiler license.

Work Conditions:

  • Work conditions vary considerably; employee may often be exposed to hot, dry, and dusty conditions, or sometimes to cold, wet and/or humid conditions.
  • Work is often around very heavy equipment with large awkward tools.
  • Employee may occasionally work in high places.
  • Employee may be exposed to hazardous conditions; e.g. confined spaces, electric, etc.
  • On-call required approximately 2--3 nights every couple weeks; will receive additional compensation for each day on call.

Physical Requirements:

  • The employee is regularly required to stand and walk, and may occasionally be required to climb, balance, or work in cramped areas. The employee must be able to bend, reach, stoop, and kneel while working in a variety of areas.
  • Requires good physical strength. The employee must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Good hearing and vision are required.
