Xylem seeks to hire a Process Engineer for the Xylem Treatment team based in Tewksbury, MA. This R&D Process Engineer opportunity is part of the Research and Development (R&D) Department of Xylem comprised of engineers, scientists, and technicians, supporting development of new products and improvement of existing products. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who has experience in water chemistry, electrochemistry, developing, testing, and improving water treatment products. This person will research, plan and perform technical duties relating to products in the purification and remediation of water and wastewater. Duties include: (i) developing novel electrochemical and other technologies to maintain competitive edge; (ii) developing and improving material formulations related to water treatment products; (iii) transferring new formulations from the laboratory to the product development organization; (iv) conferring with scientists or engineers to interpret test results (v) maintaining laboratory instruments to ensure proper working order and troubleshooting malfunctions; (vi) writing technical papers or reports of preparing standards and specifications for processes, products, or tests; and (vii) compiling/analyzing test information to report out to management. Role also includes learning and understanding various applications for products and testing/developing products to tailor performance for various applications.

This position will interface with other areas within the organization, including business development and intellectual property. Expect to work in a cross functional team to develop new products, test and improve existing products, and evaluate alternate and competitive technologies. An understanding of project management, business principles, and risk mitigation is desirable.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Development of Electrochemical Filtration Devices

  • Develop test plans, drive testing execution, analyze, document results and report out to management

  • Lead and guide technician(s) priority, workload, technical understanding

  • Learn critical market drivers/needs and understand product applications

  • Manage projects or sub projects including timelines and budgets and work in an interdisciplinary team

  • Lead product troubleshooting, failure analysis, and root cause analysis

  • Analyze water samples in house using tools and equipment

  • Effectively presents and explains engineering concepts both orally and in writing.

Required Knowledge, Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Civil, Environmental Engineering or Electrochemistry

  • 2+ years experience in a related position involving the development and characterization of electrochemical products

  • Understand water treatment technologies and products

  • Understanding customer applications, needs, and product implications

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and quick to learn new software

  • Experience with: (i) electro-membrane separation technologies, electrocatalytic reactions; (ii) the use of electrochemical technologies for the removal of specific contaminants in water

  • Background in electrochemistry/dissolved ion filtration is a plus

  • Project management experience (including budgeting/scheduling) and working in an interdisciplinary team preferred

  • Experience with creation/use of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, required

  • Safety-first mindset, ability to follow all safety rules and wear all required safety equipment (PPE)

  • General water filtration experience is a plus including an understanding of water treatment processes such as membrane filtration, media filtration, carbon absorption, ion exchange, disinfection, and advanced oxidation.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Tewksbury, MA. Role is primarily an in-office position but some hybrid with office/WFH is acceptable.

  • Travel: Some light travel anticipated (up to 10%)
