POSITION OVERVIEW

Do you love engaging with people (ie.,teammates, stakeholders and customers) to bring about innovation? If so, read on!

As Senior Product Designer, you will be a part of the core team that creates compelling user experiences for The Globe and Mail’s website and apps. Bring your experience building and shipping complex applications and software to play a key role in ensuring that we continually evolve the user experience to be personally rewarding for our readers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design world-class experiences that wills increase audience engagement and support editorial storytelling in a way that feels simple, elegant and understandable

  • Break down and solve problems through the full range of UX activities from problem definition, concept development, prototyping and testing, creating new UI elements — all of which will elevate the user experience across all digital products

  • Conduct research and feedback sessions with our readers to explore problems and iterate design solutions

  • Continuously collaborate with other designers, your product manager partner, developers, and stakeholders in other departments from discovery through to delivery.

  • Contribute to our evolving design system to ensure consistency across platforms and products

  • Contribute to our product strategy and grow your professional self as you evangelize the impact of your great work and learning across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience designing digital products

  • Your passion for user experience and design thinking, a strong desire to be innovative within the news, content publishing and media industry

  • Demonstrable conceptual thinking and clarity in oral communication and documentation

  • Orientation to detail with your ability to work quickly to create wireframes, interaction design, design specifications and finished front-end designs

  • Experience talking to customers and facilitating user feedback sessions

  • Experience working with a design system: you know UX best practices inside and out and can proactively contribute to evolving the system

  • Experience working with data and metrics: proven ability to translate both qualitative and quantitative improvements to the user experience

  • A positive attitude that embraces diversity and inclusion in the workplace: you’re open-minded, mature, and willing to improve your skillset and work through constructive feedback

  • Extensive experience using design tools like Figma, Miro, Google docs

  • A solid understanding of how digital tech works to facilitate effective communication with your engineering partners; Basic front-end coding comprehension such as CSS, HTML.

Your portfolio should include case studies that demonstrate:

  • Problem framing and opportunities to support user and business needs

  • The process by which you develop your solutions, the constraints and potential trade-offs you encountered

  • Your criteria for success and how you measure your solutions and outcomes

  • What you learned from the process and how it’s made you a better designer

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience outsourcing work such as illustration, working with agencies

  • Adjacent skills like illustration, animation, video

  • Experience leading design workshops with team members and stakeholders

  • Experience designing software that uses AI and machine learning
