General Description

This is skilled work in the mechanical repair, maintenance and reconditioning of assigned gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive, construction and/or maintenance equipment. Employees in this position are expected to be able to perform all work tasks and comply with any work schedules, attendance, or duty requirements which may be established by City or department rules, or applicable union contracts. Work is reviewed through observation while in progress, upon completion and through the evaluation of results achieved.

All applicants selected for an interview will also participate in a skills assessment on the same date.

This position requires a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and the selected candidate for hire must complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, FMCSA Clearinghouse query, and DOT Certification physical examination.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspect and diagnose malfunctions; repair, maintain and recondition gasoline and/or diesel-powered automobiles, lightweight trucks, specialty buses, police cruisers, specialized heavy duty construction machinery, power chain saws, lawn mowers, and other allied small engine and grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Repair and replace fuels systems that are either carbureted or electronic ignition on both gasoline and diesel motors.

  • Maintain detailed records on repairs for billing, scheduling, and time-keeping purposes utilizing an asset management system.

  • Maintain engine cooling and air conditioning systems.

  • Maintains all City rolling stock and dumpsters.

  • Maintain the cleanliness of work area; closes shop at the end of shift.

  • Realign, adjust, and repair brakes.

  • Service transmission, hydraulic compressed air, and electrical control systems and components.

  • Service equipment by lubrication; change oil and filters, adding to and/or changing transmission and differential lubricants.

  • Repair and install electrical automotive apparatus, such as starters, alternators, distributors, and voltage regulators.

  • Repair or replace electronic control modules.

  • May do some minor welding work incidental to completion of repair assignments.

  • Use and repair hand tools, modern mechanical power tools, and electronic equipment to assist in task completion.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Licenses and Certifications

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.

  • High school graduation or completion of GED

  • Three (3) to five (5) years’ experience as an automotive mechanic

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, including military training

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Florida Driver's License.

  • Must have a CDL Class B license with passenger endorsement or be able to obtain within six (6) months.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Environmental Conditions

  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair, maintenance and reconditioning of a variety of assigned gasoline and/or diesel powered automotive, construction and/or maintenance equipment.

  • Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines and related equipment.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, air breaks, electronic controls, and their systems or components.

  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical repair trade.

  • Skill in the proper use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.

  • Ability to detect and diagnose defects in automotive equipment.

  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to interpret and work from electrical schematics, sketches and maintenance diagrams.

  • Ability to lift heavy automotive parts; to stoop, kneel, or lie on back while looking overhead for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, contractors and the public, as necessitated by the work.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrections)

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing and by Police radio or cell phone.

  • Ability to access input and retrieve information from a computer in the vehicle.

  • Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to frequently enter and exit the various vehicles described.

  • Ability to life more than 75 lbs. on a frequent basis.

  • Ability to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, see and smell.

Works both indoors and outside but is primarily outside and will be exposed to weather elements.
