The Safety Director plans and implements the company\'s safety program by partnering with all areas of the business to ensure a safe, productive, healthy, and accident-free work environment across all of our locations and jobsites in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. This position will manage a team of safety professionals that assist in carrying out the company\'s safety program.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates Safety Representatives in all areas
  • Provides safety leadership
  • Mentors safety staff and ensures their professional development
  • Supports employee involvement, assumes leadership role in developing positive work environment
  • Collaborates with other leaders to develop safety solutions
  • Monitors and maintains compliance
  • Coordinates all safety/regulatory compliance measures throughout all of our office and construction sites in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan and ensures all requirements are implemented.
  • Develops current and comprehensive knowledge of all applicable state, federal and local health and safety regulations/laws/requirements affecting the business including environmental, health, and safety.
  • Creates and files all required reports
  • Prepares necessary monthly stats reports
  • Conducts job site internal audits
  • Identifies and evaluates risk hazards and develops proper measures of control
  • Develops and coordinates health and safety training
  • Identifies safety training needs
  • Ensures required training is conducted; develops an annual schedule
  • Assists in development of safety training curriculum
  • Audits older safety training materials for updating
  • Develops / coordinates annual refresher training for all sites
  • Drives workplace safety
  • Assists with the development of strategies, policies and programs to instill a safe culture
  • Collaborate with Heritage Construction & Materials and related companies on required safety initiatives
  • Determines the appropriateness of introducing targeted safety initiatives
  • Assist with development of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of corporate safety initiatives
  • Conducts / coordinates noise and dust monitoring
  • Maintains hearing conservation program
  • Stays current on safety programs and developments by maintaining contact with others in the field (e.g., OSHA, professional association and educational groups, and professional development efforts)
  • Leads and serves on necessary safety committees and serves on other Heritage safety teams/committees as appropriate
  • Promotes safety and health awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters and specific training program
  • Promotes personal safety
  • Wears all prescribed PPE
  • Investigates incidents
  • Partners with onsite/plant managers to conduct investigations and analysis of property damage/injury/illness/near miss reports
  • Assist to identify root cause of incident and implements corrective action
  • Completes required reporting
  • Acts as a liaison with medical personnel/insurance claims adjusters
  • Maintains highest levels of confidentiality
  • Communicates effectively with internal/external customers.
  • Answers inquiries via phone, email or in-person
  • Steward effective relationships with employees, peers, managers, regulators, and vendors
  • Demonstrates high levels of integrity and credibility through effective communication

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Safety Management, Construction Management or related discipline, or equivalent work experience; required

Experience Qualifications

  • 5+ years work exper ence in corporate safety department/safety management required
  • Experience in development of safety processes and training of individuals on process required
  • Experience in heavy highway or industrial setting preferred

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions on heavy highway construction sites
