Bonneville Power Administration Sheet Metal Mechanic in Vancouver, Washington

Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Responsibilities As a Sheet Metal Mechanic, you will: Determine detailed work procedures, machinery, materials, and tools to use on projects. Develop ideas, designs, drawings, sketches, or general instructions into practical tools, devices, or components. Lies out, forms, constructs, and assembles items and systems. Evaluates structural damage in order to plan and lay out repair and modification projects. Exchange ideas, coordinates work, and creates samples in cooperation with other crafts, supervisors, and engineers. Operate sheet metal working equipment and tools. Assembles, disassembles, files, chips, scrapes, reams, welds (mig, tig, arc, and gas), brazes, or solders as incidental tasks. Uses measuring instruments. Use CAD software to create 2 dimensional drawings for part fabrication. With the CAD generated drawing, program and operator a laser machine to produce part. Install fabricated sheet metal items, including mounting them in field locations and adapting products as necessary. Follow safety rules and safe work practices, including proper use of tools and equipment, safe driving techniques, fire prevention, evacuation procedures, and general housekeeping practices. Reports unsafe working conditions to supervisor. Perform welding on sheet metal and plate projects, cold roll, steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Requirements Conditions of Employment This position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position. After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards. Apprentices in the last year of the program are encouraged to submit an application to indicate duty locations for which they want to be considered for permanent placement. Become familiar with and follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual. Subject to call for emergency work outside normal hours. Possess a valid non-electrical unescorted access worker's permit, or obtain one within 30 days after appointment. Travel to field sites. Possess a valid state driver's license. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants. Possess within one year of appointment, and maintain continuously thereafter, a First Aid Card. Operate motor vehicles including sedans, pick-up trucks, vans, forklifts, and small cranes. Obtain certification on the equipment associated with the sheet metal shop if assigned to use or operate. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed at the Sheet Metal Shops at Ross Complex. Work involves some heavy or awkward lifting of metal sheets weighting up to 100 pounds. Field work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Hazards include working around machinery with moving parts; working around energized, high-voltage electrical equipment; being exposed to constant metal-shop noise and vibration; and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, and steel structures, up to 100 feet which may occur during inclement weather. The Mechanics are subject to minor cuts, bruises, falls and burns. Proper respiratory and safety equipment shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled (solvent fumes, cleaners, epoxies, etc.). At times, work may be physically demanding. The work environment will occasionally include exposure to hazardous substances, (lead, zinc poisoning, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed, pose a health risk. Emergencies, critical system conditions, or outage limitations may require that work be system wide, done at night, or under serious time pressures. System priorities may require extended periods of overtime including working weekends and holidays.
