Description

Under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist and guidance of a supervising therapist, plans, organizes, and implements rehabilitation programs in treatment and/or community services.

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants - Per Diem Pool are limited benefited employees who provide, occupational, and mental health rehabilitation services.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Per Diem Pool (PDP) classifications are distinguished from Regular classifications in that additional compensation is provided in lieu of full County benefits. Per Diem Pool assignments are scheduled flexibly or on an as-needed basis; therefore, incumbents are not guaranteed any specific number of work hours per biweekly pay period and may be called off if there is insufficient work to be performed during any assigned shift.

PAYROLL TITLE: Rehabilitation Therapist-PDP II

DEPARTMENT/AGENCY: Health Care Agency – Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC)

Rehabilitation Therapist-PDP II is represented by the Services Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime compensation.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Per Diem Pool vacancies. There is currently one (1) Per Diem Pool vacancy at the Ventura County Medical Center.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

OPENING DATE: 4/17/24

Examples Of Duties

Duties performed are in accordance with the California licensure or certification standards and may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Performs and documents ongoing treatments and progress of patients to determine functional status and deficits;

  • Plans, develops, and utilizes occupational therapy procedures to meet the functional needs of patients;

  • Confers with the physician, patient, and family and sets functional goals for appropriate therapy;

  • Performs tests and measures within the scope of hired profession;

  • Initiates and maintains records of patients' status and progress;

  • Provides patient and family education to assist in achievement of functional goals;

  • Coordinates occupational therapy programs with other agencies;

  • Leads, instructs, and encourages patients in a program of individual and group activities of a physical, social, and cultural nature such as industrial arts, handicrafts, indoor and outdoor games and sports, music groups, special interest classes, and self-care activities designed to promote improved mental and physical health;

  • With the therapeutic team, plans treatment goals to maintain or improve motivation, vocational guidance, and counseling including training or job placement;

  • Utilizes therapeutic techniques in working toward these goals with groups or individuals; and

  • Assists in educating staff, volunteers, and other community agency personnel in the psychological objectives of the activity programs; instructs in all phases of the program; and develops special treatment programs for clients with problems in substance abuse; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list:

A broad background consisting of training and/or experience which would provide the knowledge and abilities to perform in Occupational Therapy.

Must have graduated from an American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA)-approved occupational therapy assistant education program OR must have successfully passed the Occupational Therapy Board exam for occupational therapy assistants.

Possession of a current valid certificate issued by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy OR be eligible to apply for and obtain a certificate from the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy within the probationary period. Once obtained, a current valid California Certificate is a condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid California driver license and proof of auto insurance may be required

  • Possession of a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate by date of hire. Once obtained, it is a condition of continued employment

  • Must possess the physical ability to lift and carry 35 pounds

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of:

  • theory and practice of rehabilitation of physically and mentally handicapped persons;

  • therapeutic principles and techniques of group and individual activities used in occupational, recreational, and skill in their application.

    General knowledge of:

  • basic pathology involved in diseases and injuries resulting in physical and mental handicaps and the physical and psychological problems of the handicapped.

    Working ability to:

  • provide leadership in various types of rehabilitation therapy activities;

  • interpret rehabilitation therapy activities to hospital and day treatment facility personnel, relatives, patients and others;

  • teach other basic activity skills;

  • prepare reports and keep records to be included in case histories;

  • analyze situations accurately and take an effective course of action;

  • work cooperatively with a multi-disciplinary team.
