Description

WHO YOU ARE: Are you passionate about providing the highest quality of patient care to pediatric patients? Are you looking to start your nursing career working close to patients, or transition into a more specialized field? The County of Ventura - Healthcare Agency is looking for an empathetic, compassionate individual to fill our position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO: In this position, you will provide advanced skilled nursing care, patient and staff education in the pediatric hematology/oncology unit as well as collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure our patients receive the highest level of patient care. You will work weekdays and dayshifts, with no nights or weekends required in this position.

OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate for this position is self-directed with sharp judgment skills. This candidate has a high-level of integrity and accountability and is dedicated to establishing a sound care plan to meet patient needs. The ideal candidate is also willing and able to maintain current knowledge of evolving hematology and oncology practices.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

The Primary Care Clinical Registered Nurse series is distinguished from other nursing classifications in that it is assigned to ambulatory care programs affiliated with the Ventura County Health Care Agency and requires that incumbents demonstrate advanced competency skills and knowledge specific to specialty areas (i.e., family care, women's services, pediatrics, infusion/oncology, surgery/orthopedics, etc.). Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure providing clinical care with a decreasing amount of supervision commensurate with their experience. The levels are distinguished by experience and leadership assignments.

The Per Diem Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse series is distinguished from the Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse series in that Per Diem Nurses are scheduled to work on an as-needed basis (intermittent) to supplement staffing needs.

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Educational Incentive for completion of: 2.5% for an Associate's degree, 3.5% for a Bachelor's degree, or 5% for a Master's degree.

  • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications. One of the five certifications may be paid at $2.00 per hour for a National Certification. List provided in the MOA, Sec. 805 (link below)

  • Evening Shift Differential - 7.5%

  • Night Shift Differential – 15%

  • Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years

  • Preceptor Pay – $1.00 per hour

  • Float Nurse Premium Pay - $3.50 per hour

  • Standby Premium Pay – ¼ of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)

  • Flexible Credit Allowance: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.

  • Pension Plan: Participation in the County's defined benefit plan.

Approximate Salaries

Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse I - $41.60 - $43.72 per hour

Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse II - $49.31 - $58.96 per hour

Per Diem Clinic Registered Nurse I - $41.67 - $43.80 per hour

Per Diem Clinic Registered Nurse II - $51.38 - $61.44 per hour

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency – Ambulatory Care

Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse I/II's are represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

NOTE: Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-Term), Per Diem Pool, Intermittent, and Extra-Help vacancies within the Health Care Agency. There is currently one (1) Regular, Full-Time position available.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Coordinates and facilitates delivery of care to patients and families in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Pediatric Diagnostic Center Clinics;

  • Assesses and identifies nursing care needs for patients and families, and planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions appropriate to their needs;

  • Develops and implements patient and family education and treatment plans and intervenes when problems arise;

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams (e.g. physicians, nurses, pharmacies, outpatient facilities) and with the Children's Hospital Los Angeles to establish patient care plans and ensure continuation of care;

  • Participates in the development of clinic policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care;

  • Maintains current knowledge and certifications in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and infusion specialties and maintains the ability to apply the same methods to direct patient care;

  • Collects and prepares blood and specimens for lab testing, performs duties related to infusions (such as phlebotomy, IV and central line access, maintenance, and care) and provides infusion medications/blood transfusions within the protocols and physician orders;

  • Documents pertinent patient information, such as assessments, changes in condition, and treatment and medication administration using the Cerner Electronic Health Record system;

  • Provides case management to patients with high risk/chronic conditions to support treatment plan and patient self- management goals;

  • Triages patients with proper disposition and appropriate level of care using agency triage protocols;

  • Performs environment of care of clinical audits to ensure regulatory compliance, in collaboration with Director of Nursing/Clinical Director;

  • Provides effective counseling in health maintenance and disease management;

  • Monitors patient reactions to prescriptions as well as a uthorizes drug refills and provides detailed prescription information to pharmacies ; and

  • Performs related duties as required.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE

Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse I/Per Diem Clinic Registered Nurse I

Requires no experience; however successful completion of the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment is mandatory for assignments within the Health Care Agency.

Primary Care Clinic Registered Nurse II/ Per Diem Clinic Registered Nurse II

Requires six (6) months of full-time professional registered nursing experience.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.

  • Must have a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment.

  • Must be willing and able to obtain a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within three (3) months of hire date.

  • Must be willing and able to obtain and maintain an Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) Chemotherapy/Biotherapy certification within six (6) months of hire date.

DESIRED:

  • Previous work experience in pediatrics or pediatric hematology/oncology departments

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working (Level I) to comprehensive (Level II) knowledge of:

  • The principles, practices, and techniques used in nursing care at hematology/oncology specialty clinics.

  • Patient and staff educational methods and quality assurance processes

  • Chemotherapy/Biotherapy nursing practices

  • Blood and platelet transfusion practices

Working (Level I) to comprehensive (Level II) ability to:

  • Provide direction and serve as a resource to others;

  • Complete required continuing education programs;

  • Comply with and maintain accreditation standards and federal, state, and local regulatory requirements;

  • Work proficiently in emergency and/or stressful situations;

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient/client information;

  • Effectively maintain a positive working relationship with the medical staff, public, patients, and hospital administration; and

  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
