Position Summary

Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at the higher senior engineer level within the job hierarchy.

Based out of Raleigh, Wilmington, or Florence (alternative locations available in the Carolinas) The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied. This position is a Distribution Protection Automation & Control Engineer for Duke Energy Carolinas East.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

• Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity• Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team• Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity• Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems• Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies• Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.• Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally• Primarily responsible for utilizing engineering software and tools to determine protective coordination and provide relay settings files for SEL relay controls for electronic distribution reclosers.• Involved in supporting reliability initiatives such as sectionalization protection studies and PowerUp.• Serves as a consultant for solar and battery interconnections• Gets involved with local temporary switching for project work, to avoid outages and limit use of portable transformers. Interfaces with Capacity Planning and Grid Management.

Required/Basic Qualifications - Engineer III

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and/or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).

  • A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience.

Required/Basic Qualifications - Senior Engineer

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and/or state registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).

  • A Master's degree in engineering can be considered in lieu of the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience with a current PE OR

  • Minimum 6 years of engineering experience without a current PE.

Desired Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

Mobility classification - Hybrid

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry

  • Experience in the use of the CYME or similar analysis tool

  • Available for storm response
