Job Description

General Summary:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist I, under general supervision, provides knowledge and support of the agency regarding its environmental health and safety programs.

This position reports to the Environmental Health and Safety Manager.

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • Associate’s degree in environmental, health, and safety or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience in environmental health and safety or related field.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.

  • Ability to achieve certification as Compliance Safety and Health Official (CSHO) within two years of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Compliance Safety and Health Official or related EHS certification.

  • Certification in First Aid.

  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

  • Four years of related work experience such as public works, emergency response, firefighting, law enforcement, or security.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat.

  • Physical conditioning consistent with supporting outdoor work and training for up to 8-10 hours/day.

  • Ability to lift, carry, load, or unload light, moderate, and/or heavy material with assistance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate.

  • Ability to interact with clients and staff positively and professionally.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Working knowledge of office software and instructional programs.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Equipment:

  • Standard office equipment: computer, keyboard, multifunctional printer, telephone.

  • Small hand tools such as hammer, screwdriver, etc.

Notifications:

  • This position is security sensitive.

  • This position may require work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TEEX regulations and procedures.

  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and Agency safety requirements.

  • As part of TEEX’s mission of providing training, developing practical solutions, and saving lives; this position could be required, if called upon, to deploy within the State of Texas as directed by this position’s Division Director/HQ Department Head.

  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations by driving a personal or TEEX vehicle and/or flying on commercial airlines.

  • This position may have exposure to bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.

Essential Duties, Tasks, and Percentages:

EHS Program Support 90%

  • Performs facility and work evaluations in accordance with the TEEX EHS programs under supervisor's or more senior specialist's guidance.

  • Responds to inquiries or complaints regarding environmental health and safety issues by interacting and communicating effectively.

  • Prepares reports for supervisors and customers.

  • Conducts incident investigations of events and accidents and develops appropriate response measures.

  • Conducts EHS training.

  • Duties and tasks may require operating an agency vehicle to complete assignments.

Other Duties: 10%

  • Performs additional work duties as assigned.

While TX-TF1, an elite urban search and rescue team, provides emergency response personnel and resources during disasters , TX-PWRT restores public utilities such as water, gas and electricity after disasters.
