Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor of Security, the Lead Security Officer is charged with directing the subordinate personnel under his/her authority. The Lead Security Officer is responsible for providing a reasonable safe and secure environment for all who enter Keck Medicine of USC Hospitals and clinics properties and to assure the physical security of buildings and grounds. The Lead Security Officer will report and document all infractions of rules, regulations and policies including all federal, state and local laws and ordinances. The Lead Security Officer will provide direction to Security Officers while on shift and perform other duties of a more responsible and demanding level, as defined by Hospital's Security Department. Responds rapidly to security emergencies within the hospital or other healthcare settings. While not authorized to carry firearms, may use security defensive equipment (e.g., batons, pepper foam/gel, handcuffs) when necessary, according to training and/or standard procedures. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of Keck Medical Center of USC. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values of the Keck Medical Center of USC.

Essential Duties:

  • Informs the Director of Security/ Manager regarding ANY circumstances or situations that have or may have serious impact on the hospitals and clinics.

  • Supports and adheres to Security Department policies and procedures guidelines.

  • Serves as Officer in Charge of the schedule shift when requested by Director/ Manager of Security.

  • Maintains current knowledge of new methods, products, trends, and practices in hospital security and emergency management.

  • Recognizes an escalation/de-escalation of force situation when confronted with the threat or intimidation of force and make the correct management decisions without supervision.

  • Enforce and abide by all regulations and guidelines of the Keck Medicine of USC

  • Provide a visible deterrence to crime, prohibited activities, or suspicious activities in public and non-public areas such as the main building, outlying buildings, grounds, parking areas, stairways, tunnels, mechanical areas, patient treatment areas

  • Ensures the delivery of high-quality customer service through regular contact with patients; evaluates service quality and initiates corrective action as necessary.

  • May provide physical assistance alongside a staff member, including but not limited to nursing supervisor and / or nursing aid in lifting, transporting, and placing cadavers in a morgue or designated location.

  • Interacts regularly with patients or representatives for status updates and addresses any security related or potential problems; carries out security plans.

  • Enhance skills; carries out disciplinary actions as necessary.

  • Escort persons and assist facility personnel, members, and medical staff upon request throughout organization including parking lots and/or hospital premises, including hotel/student housing

  • Successfully completes Healthcare Security Competency Tasks and its associated checklist in collaboration with management.

  • Maintains a positive, professional environment in full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, standards, organizational policies and procedures. Acts to ensure that staff members understand and comply with applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.

  • Follows department scheduling to effectively to meet client requirements while controlling labor costs; reviews site reports to ensure post orders and client directions have been followed.

  • Performs additional functions, duties and specific tasks of a similar nature and scope as necessary to achieve assigned business objectives.

  • Maintaining composure in dealing with authorities, executives, clients, staff, media, and the public, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations.

  • Must undergo and meet company standards for background and reference checks, controlled substance testing, and behavioral selection survey.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.

  • Must understand and demonstrate the ability to take protective actions, following established guidelines.

  • Participates in the development, documentation, communication, testing and periodic review and revision of business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

  • Oversee the development of an ongoing education program for the various constituencies regarding information security including the nature of and rationale for new policies as they are developed.

  • Monitors and assures that policies and procedures related to accuracy, integrity, confidentiality, and security are maintain.

  • Develop and maintain system agreements with appropriate understating of patient confidentiality, security and HIPPA.

  • Respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations.

  • When security breaches occur involving systems within the hospital, assist physical and technical staff by reporting the incident on a hospital security incident report.

  • Ensure the compliance with governmental regulations (HIPAA, FERPA, The Clery Act etc.) and hospital policies. Maintain security documentation as required for outside regulatory agencies (The Joint Commission, HIPPA, etc.). Thorough knowledge of emergency procedure. Follow of company standards as mentioned in Security standard procedure.

  • Escort persons and assist facility personnel, visitors and medical staff upon request. Ensure the safety of visitors’ and employees’ to park vehicles.

  • Ensure material/assets are physically verified while coming in and going out of the premises.

  • Make regular patrol rounds (Physical / Vehicle) of the premises and ensure security measures are adhered.

  • Check security management logbook, emails information daily during your shift assignment.

  • Keep the security supervisor apprised and informed of conditions and security activities in the hospital and clinics.

  • Take information of investigations of all reported crimes, injuries / illness or any unusual incidents; make necessary reports to document incident.

Successfully complete modules and training programs.

  • In the event of an emergency, the employee holding this position is required to “report to duty” in accordance with the Keck Medical Center of USC Emergency Operations Plan and/or the employee’s department’s emergency response and/or recovery plans. Familiarity with those plans and regular training to implement those plans is required. During or immediately following an emergency, the employee will be notified to assist in the emergency response efforts and mobilize other staff members if needed.

  • In performing functions, duties or tasks, employees are required to know and follow safe work practices, and to be aware of company policies and procedures related to job safety, including safety rules and regulations. Employees are required to notify superiors upon becoming aware of unsafe working conditions.

  • Ensure staff is punching into Time & Attendance system to ensure clocking in/out of shifts daily.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req High school or equivalent

  • Req 2 years 2-3 year of related experience required (preferably in a healthcare setting)

  • Req Demonstrated experience in monitoring surveillance system and writing reports.

  • Req Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergency situations

  • Req Respond to and report activities which could result in injury to a person or damage to or loss of property

  • Req Ability to communicate effectively with diverse people including members, patients, visitors, and medical personnel

  • Req Oral and written communications skills, including the excellent written and spoken English.

  • Req Ability to write accurate, clear, and legible reports

  • Req Maintain a positive working relationship with facility staff members

  • Req Maintain a thorough knowledge of a facility and where applicable of multiple facilities

  • Req Knowledge about all security equipment, security operations and computer software.

  • Req Ability to identify critical issues quickly and accurately.

  • Req Physical ability to handle various intervention incidents, including patient restraints and violent subjects.

  • Req Understanding of CAL-OSHA, CDPH, HIPPA, and/or Joint Commission (TJC), Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) rules, regulations, guidelines and laws; understand the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) hospital emergency codes and hospital response procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Experience, knowledge and/or training, in safety, fire protection, civil disturbance, emergency preparedness procedures and planning, C.P.R./AED, Security and Safety issues and standards as set forth by Department of Health Services and The Joint Commission is preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Driver's License (CA DMV) Valid current California driver’s license is required.

  • Req Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association

  • Req California Guard Certification (BSIS) BSIS California Guard Certification Card required and must be maintained by renewal before expiration date.

  • Req International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) (Basic) IAHSS-International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (Basic Certification) required within 6 months of hire

  • Req AVADE Workplace Violence Prevention Certification AVADE Workplace Violence Prevention Certification - required within 6 months of meeting eligibility criteria.

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The hourly rate range for this position is $25.00 - $39.69.
