Job Overview

The Assistant Director of Campus Operations is entrusted with overseeing critical aspects of campus functionality and aesthetics. Their multifaceted role involves directing solid waste management, landscaping, grounds maintenance, special events coordination, and water mitigation/mold remediation. Their primary objectives include ensuring compliance with local regulations, maintaining the visual appeal and functionality of campus grounds, and orchestrating seamless event experiences.

They lead dedicated teams in executing these responsibilities, while also managing budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships. Their success in this role significantly contributes to fostering a clean, safe, and inviting environment that is conducive to the University's academic mission and community engagement initiatives.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Reporting to the Director of Custodial and Grounds, the Assistant Director of Campus Operations directly manages five subordinate supervisors (Landscaping and Grounds Manager, Zero Waste Manager, Supervisor of Solid Waste and Recycling, Special Events Supervisor, and an environmental services coordinator), who collectively direct the work of approximately 50 union-represented staff.

They plan an integral role in overseeing all outdoor operations on behalf of the Planning and Facilities Management department and has direct interaction with campus partners such as Georgetown Athletics Department, Georgetown Events Management Service, Student Affairs, Office of Neighborhood Life, Office of Sustainability, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Hoya Hospitality (Aramark), Earth Commons, Office of Transportation Management, Georgetown Catering, and other groups who typically host outdoor events.

Their work contributes importantly to the overall mission of the department, which is to provide facilities maintenance services to University users, by ensuring an attractive, clean, orderly and safe environment for learning, living, and working.

Essential Designation Planning and Facilities Management staff are designated as essential. Their duties require some weekend and off-hour work, particularly to cover major events such as snow storms, student move-in and move-out, athletic events, and Signature Events – for example, Alumni Weekend, Parents Weekend, Georgetown Day, Homecoming, and Commencement.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • BA or BS (4 year degree)

  • 5 to 7 years of work experience in facilities management as a manager, assistant director, or director level - including at least 5 years of experience managing large teams of unionized labor and one or more years of experience in waste management and/or landscaping, as well as managing large event setups – preference for 5+ years of direct work experience in waste management and/or landscaping

  • Advanced computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other specialized software relevant to facilities and event management

  • Strong adaptability to new software platforms and effective communication skills for electronic collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in one or more of the following fields of study: Facilities Management, Business Administration, Waste Management, Sustainability, Property Management, Landscaping

  • Bilingual in Spanish
