Distinguishing Features of Work

This is semiskilled manual work in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices. These employees perform semiskilled work and may serve as crew leaders over maintenance workers. They assist skilled workers in difficult repair and maintenance work. Assignments are received in the form of written or oral work orders and are performed independently, although subject to inspection while in process or upon completion.\ \ The days and hours for this position:Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM\ Bargaining Unit: Service Employee\'s International (SEIU)\ **\"Employees within the department or division shall be given first consideration**

Examples of Work Performed
  • Performs work erecting, installing, and maintaining traffic signal support equipment and signs.
  • Performs work assisting with assembling, repairing, and maintaining traffic signal heads.
  • Performs work installing underground conduit for traffic signal control and detection equipment.
  • Performs work involving the installation and maintenance of pavement markings, utilizing paint, and or thermoplastic.
  • Performs work assisting with the installation of traffic control devices.
  • Performs work assisting co-workers or crew involving the installation and/ or maintenance of traffic signs, signals, and markings.
  • Performs work operating a variety of vehicles from light pickup trucks, to heavy equipment such as dump trucks attached with snow removal equipment.

Requirements of Work
  • Working knowledge of basic computer skills for record keeping.
  • Ability to legibly document tasks utilizing paper forms, and computer data entry.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment and tools, both manual and powered, to include electric, battery, air, and hydraulic powered tools.
  • Ability to understand directions verbal and written instructions, including but not limited to, internal and external work orders, sketches, and blueprints.
  • Ability to distinguish colors and shapes accurately.
  • Ability to develop and maintain proficient working relationships with co-workers, and employees of the City, as well as external personnel such as contractors, vendors, and citizens.
  • Working knowledge of methods, practices, tools, and materials used in general maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to safely operate hand and powered tools related to maintenance work.
  • Ability to tolerate exposure to occupational nuisances associated with working in high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely work in and around high traffic volume work zones.
  • Ability to safely climb stairs, ladders, bend, twist, and reach as necessary to complete required tasks.
  • Ability to safely maneuver in, on, and around a wide variety of vehicles and or equipment.
  • Ability to safely and independently lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 90 pounds, or with assistance of another person up to 300 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement and sometimes extreme weather conditions, including but not limited to rain, snow, ice, sleet, heat, humidity, and low visibility conditions due to low light, or bright light.
  • Ability to work emergency response operations that could involve, but are not limited to some of the adverse weather conditions that were listed above. These operations may include 12 hour rotating shifts, overnight shifts, weekend shifts, and oliday shifts.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 60 days of hire.
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals internally or externally.
Required Experience and Training
  • Two years of experience of a semiskilled nature in the installation and repair of traffic control devices, and or construction work. Including, but not limited to, general maintenance and repair skills involved with construction, mechanical, or streets and grounds maintenance.

  • Must have a valid driver\'s license at time of hire. The successful candidate will be required to acquire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker and Air Brake endorsements within 60 days of hire.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.
