DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will perform detailed microscopic and laboratory analyses of biological samples, focusing on the identification, quantification, and classification of organisms based on their tolerance to pollution. The biological specimens under examination will include fish, benthic macroinvertebrates, and aquatic plants.

You will also engage in extensive field studies to assess the impact of various waste discharges-such as sewage, industrial effluents, stormwater runoff, and mine drainage-on the abundance and distribution of diverse aquatic life forms in ecosystems like lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers.

Additionally, you will carry out surveys of streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes following established protocols set by the Department. This position entails providing expert aquatic biological recommendations to both Regional and Central Office personnel, contributing to efforts aimed at detecting, preventing, and mitigating water pollution.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Wilkes-Barre. This role will require travel, which may include overnight stays. Salary:Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $50,836.00 (before taxes). QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management, including or supplemented by six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework; or An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework. Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree. Special Requirement: This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle license. Other Requirements: You must meet the PA residency requirement.
