M&T Bank Technology Manager - Wealth Investment Management Technology in Wilmington, Delaware

We are looking for a manager of our Investment Management Technology Team motivated by solving technical problems, providing new applications and working on all aspects of asset and investment management.

The successful candidate is expected to lift the Wealth Investment Management Team in order to deliver advanced investment and asset management capabilities, streamline the investment process, enhance the systems to allow for new investment products, and introduce new technologies using Agile best practices.

Job Description

  • Reporting to the Head of M&T Wealth Technology, the successful candidate will be a key member of the M+T Tech team; responsible for providing leadership and oversight with regards to technology strategy, implementation, and production end-to-end.

  • The successful candidate needs to understand business functionalities and vendor ecosystem as it pertains to all aspects of asset and investment management: from order generation, to trading, client and performance reporting, investment analytics and planning. Experience with streamlining investment and reporting processes and the implementation of unified/separated managed accounts are a big advantage.

  • Because of the nature of the business, the resource will own and lead both, the development of inhouse built applications as well as the integration of vendor packages. We expect the successful candidate to research and assess viability of software vendors. Negotiate contracts. Hold vendors to their SLA. Improve integration patterns.

  • While we expect a significant portion of software is vendor provided, vendor software needs to be integrated and applications have to developed by the Investment Management Technology Team. As such we expect the successful candidate to be proficient in integration techniques, understand data management and have a history in developing multi-tier applications. Furthermore, the resource needs to understand software testing and understand how to architect an infrastructure for the investment and asset management software environment.

  • Follow and promote M+T Agile practices. Able to approach development with modularity in mind to accommodate shifting priorities and the challenges associated with Design Thinking, rapid prototyping and Agile methodologies. Review of epics and stories provided by business product owners and turning those together with the Investment Management Technology team into technical designs and development.

  • Collaborate with Wealth product owners, vendors, architects, key partners in Enterprise Technology and the various stakeholders. As such build and fortify Enterprise wide cross-functional relationships as well as leverage external partners to optimize the Investment and Asset Management operating environment.

  • In order to be successful in this role, incidents must be kept at a minimum. The resource is expected to lead resolving any run-the-bank issues encountered in all environments, especially production.

  • Recruit, develop and coach each member in his team. Participate in firm-wide recruitment initiatives.

Mandatory Skills

  • 7+ years’ experience in leading and development of investment management technology solutions.

  • Proficiency in software design, development and prototyping methods and tools. Proficiency in industry best practices for investment and asset management applications. Familiar with testing frameworks.

  • Provide technology stewardship:

  • Ability to apply innovative technology to solutions that would benefit the M+T Wealth business.

  • Ability to develop community of practices to facilitate discussions with technical team on platform-wide considerations, driving improvement and efficiencies, and providing leadership.

  • Curator of guiding principles in alignment with Enterprise Architecture principles. Curator of standards and best practices.

  • Solution Ideation:

  • Assist business in the scoping and planning of upcoming projects.

  • Creative problem solver and solution developer when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues.

  • Develop logical architecture of solution components based on conceptual architecture/design.

  • Advise/Mentor on Technical and Functional Design: Provide advice and guidance to team leads regarding technical and functional design decisions.

  • Ability to drive through influence and team building the investment and asset management strategy with agility and leadership qualities which engineers recognize and respect:

  • Experience with Scrum, Design Thinking, Dev Ops.

  • Servant leadership.

  • Proven experience interacting as a team player with various multi-disciplinary teams of professionals.

  • Team Management: Resourcing and leadership of Agile project teams, while ensuring key partner teams are engaged (ex. Operations, Development, Technology etc).

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and leverage design to bringing clarity to abstract ideas.

  • Execution and delivery skills:

  • Proactively identifying project risks, creating risk management and mitigation plans with the team.

  • Good judgment and the ability to handle stressful situations.

  • Project Management: Leads and manages digital projects and website maintenance, including day-to-day workflow and continual process improvement while keeping all projects on time and done budget.

  • This role requires consistently to strive to improve process within the Investment Management Technology Team while ensuring all projects meet accessibility standards, and cyber security best practices.

  • Budget Management: Working with the team, oversees the team’s overall budget and works closely with the PMO team to ensure accurate acquisition of project funding.

  • Strong presentation and communication skills:

  • Ability to work closely with internal, enterprise and external (vendor) teams. As such this role requires excellent communications skills designed to properly communicate digital strategy, project requirements and status. This can include leadership and key stakeholder expectation management. Excellent presentation, written and verbal communications skills are required along with excellent relationship and negotiation skills.

  • Ability to present ideas and adjust message for maximum effectiveness based on audience: Engineers, Product Owners, business partners and M+T senior executives.

  • Critical thinker and problem-solving skills. Excellent analytical and communication skills with the ability to communicate complex issues in an easy to understand manner.

  • Technical Knowledge:

  • Hands on experience with regards to application integration patterns, designing services, data management, commercial Web applications, application containerization and network configuration.

  • Experience with SQL databases, experience with NoSQL databases such as Cassandra and/or MongoDB.

  • Deep knowledge of API (REST, SOAP), API Management and building scalable and high-performance Web APIs using Java or .net core.

  • Understanding and appreciation of infrastructure; e.g. network architecture, application monitoring, containerization, virtualization.

  • Lead experience with regards to building web applications; Angular frontend, complimented with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, JSON skills & solid programming background in other web technologies.

  • Prior experience that highlights a track record of innovative thinking, the value of good design and experience working with stakeholders to deliver results

  • Experience developing with testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, Selenium, and Cucumber. Working Knowledge of SCM, packaging and build tools – GIT, Jenkins and Maven.

  • Functional Knowledge – Asset and Investment Management:

  • Understanding of the product, operations, and technological needs of Wealth and Asset Management organizations. This includes Financial Products, Investment & Asset Management, Accounting, Client Reporting, Loan Origination, Payments and Risk Management.

  • Involvement in a performance reporting system installation and/or conversion. Understanding of the underpinnings of performance calculation, e.g. transaction classification and as-of reporting.

  • Full understanding of trading, order generation and related process optimization. Being able to explain the anatomy of a UMA or SMA installation.
