Description of Work

•In this Position you will function as a Transportation Worker IV in our Wilson County Traffic Service Unit.

•Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible functions such as manual and equipment operational work in erecting and maintaining highway signs.

•You will operate sign trucks, VMS boards and other equipment related to signing and traffic control. You will perform routine maintenance and safety checks.

•Subject to frequent emergency callback duties, traffic detours and lane closures.

•You will also serve as a lead in sign design, layout, and fabrication of highway signs as well as working closely with outsourcing supplies related to sign maintenance. Responsibilities include maintaining the sign Inventory and related documentation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

•Experience in the installation and maintenance of traffic control safety devices which includes, highway signs, pavement markings, traffic signal systems and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) devices

•Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practice

Additional Expectations:

Must be able to operate a legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe footwear meeting ASTM F2412-05 and Class "A" CDL will be required for employment. Work may require lifting to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. Preferred experience in using sign design software, MMS Task number creation, knowledge of project numbers and SAP applications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements:Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
