Nevada Copper Underground Driller (Long-hole) in Yerington, Nevada

Nevada Copper (TSX:NCU) is a copper producer and owner of the Pumpkin Hollow copper project. Located in Nevada, USA, Pumpkin Hollow has substantial reserves and resources including copper, gold, and silver. Its two fully permitted projects include the high-grade underground mine and processing facility, which is now in the production stage, and a large-scale open pit project, which is advancing towards feasibility status.

Purpose of the Position:

An Underground Driller supplies a sufficient flow of safely blasted rock to the Mine Operations department to fracture ore and waste materials so it can be handled more easily and hauled away for further processing or disposal. Operates Simba Long hole drill. Incumbent will be working in an underground production zone and must be able to safely operate equipment in an underground mining operation.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping on the equipment and work area during and after before the end of each shift.

  • Prioritize the daily plan to determine where pattern loading should start and how it should progress with minimal supervision. Drill blast holes approximately 50-80 feet in depth or as instructed by supervisor.

  • Detect and performs small mechanical repairs to the drill.

  • Ensure good and positive communication with others; communication between miners may be difficult due to noisy environments.

  • Responsible for reporting, in writing or other method, details of work activities at the completion of every job.

  • Pre/Post-Operating inspections must be performed; at the start and end of a shift, a miner is expected to perform an inspection of major equipment (i.e., drills, scoops, and trucks) that he/she is using to include workplace exams.

  • Drive drill into the drift safely at all times; occurs over unpaved, uneven, rocky terrain that frequently is covered by standing water; tunnels may be as small as 16 ft. by 16 ft. There are numerous blind corners where two or more tunnels intersect.

  • Maintaining work area in a safe condition. At various times during the work shift, various maintenance tasks are performed to promote health, safety, and good housekeeping.

  • Assess pattern layout and priorities to determine where work should be conducted.

  • Assess work area restrictions and engineering priorities to determine if drill pattern will need to be expanded.

  • Sustain a high proportion of equipment utilization with a minimal degree of supervision.

  • Position drill in a manner that allows others to work efficiently whenever possible.

  • Follow sampling procedures.

  • Ensure that holes are placed in the correct location and bored to the proper depth at the specified angle/orientation as per the drill plan.

  • Assist in preparing bench for the blast, ensuring all connections are made to provide power for the blast at the end of shift.

    Skills/Abilities:

    The Underground Driller must demonstrate the following skills:

  • One (1) to Two (2) years' experience drilling in an underground environment.

  • General knowledge of health & safety, mining, and maintenance functions

  • Able to work independently, as well as an effective member of the management team.

  • Strong communication skills with an ability to interact at all levels within the company.

  • Employee may be required to work in environments that may include exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, noise, fumes, and gases.

  • Must be eligible to obtain an Employee Possessor Permit from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

    Physical Demands:

    This position is required to work in an underground and surface environment. The incumbent must be able to:

  • Lift and carry up to 50-75 lbs. in weight

  • Periodically work in environmental extremes (i.e., hot or cold weather)

  • Sit for extended periods of time

  • Standing for extended periods of time

  • Working in confined space at times

  • Stay alert during periods of inactivity

  • Walk on uneven and poorly lit ground

  • Work independently on a rotating day shift/night shift

    Work Schedule and Personal Protective Equipment:

    The incumbent works a rotating shift schedule. Ability to work extended hours as operational needs require to support the underground operations. Personal Protective Equipment required for this position includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots. All equipment must be MSHA approved as applicable.
